Can Cancer Cause Blood Clots

Is Stomach or Abdomen Pain Indicate Serious Issues? | Dr. Gaurav Kumar

People with cancer have a greater risk of developing deep vein thrombosis . Many cancers secrete substances into the blood that make the blood “thicker” and more likely to form a clot. Many chemo drugs may also up your risk for DVT.

Why Does Cancer Cause Back Pain?

Most cases of back pain arent caused by cancer, but back pain can be an indicator.

Back pain is a symptom of many types of cancers, including primary bone cancer and those that have metastasized from the breast, colon, testicles, or lungs.

Usually, tumors put pressure on the spine and affect the nerves around it, which causes the pain.

You’re Losing Weight Without Trying

Weight loss is a sign of stomach cancer partly because of the loss of appetite that often occurs, but it can also independently be a warning sign of disease, says Oceanand it’s usually one of the first signs that something’s off especially in a disease like stomach cancer that may not have other noticeable symptoms.

Significant weight loss takes hard work, so if youre shedding pounds without even trying, dont ignore it.

Heartburn That Won’t Quit

Heartburn, indigestion, and other common symptoms of an unhappy gut can also be early warning signs, according to resources from MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas. Again, Dr. Sarpel says these sorts of symptoms are much more likely to be something other than cancer. But its still a good idea to let your doctor know whats going on.

Pain From The Cancer Itself

Pain from the cancer can be caused by a tumor pressing on nerves, bones, or organs.

Spinal cord compression: When a tumor spreads to the spine, it can press on the nerves of the spinal cord. This is called spinal cord compression. The first symptom of spinal cord compression is usually back and/or neck pain, and sometimes it is severe. Pain, numbness, or weakness may also happen in an arm or leg. Coughing, sneezing, or other movements often make the pain worse. If you have this kind of pain, it is considered an emergency and you should get help right away.

Spinal cord compression must be treated right away to keep you from losing control of your bladder or bowel or being paralyzed. If youre treated for the compression soon after the pain begins, you can usually avoid serious outcomes. Treatment for spinal cord compression usually involves radiation therapy to the area where the tumor is pressing on the spine and steroidsto shrink the tumor. Or you may be able to have surgery to remove a tumor thats pressing on the spine, which may then be followed by radiation.

Bone pain can also happen as a side effect of medicines known as growth factor drugs or colony-stimulating factors . These drugs may be given to help prevent white blood cell counts from dropping after treatment. CSF drugs help the body produce more WBCs which are made in the bone marrow. Because the bone marrow activity is higher with these drugs, bone pain may occur.

Early Warning Signs Of Stomach Cancer

Colon Cancer Symptoms & Causes

Early signs of stomach cancer may include:

  • Feeling full: Many stomach cancer patients experience a sense of “fullness” in the upper abdomen after eating small meals.
  • Heartburn: Indigestion, heartburn or symptoms similar to an ulcer may be signs of a stomach tumor.
  • Nausea and vomiting: Some stomach cancer patients have symptoms that include nausea and vomiting. Sometimes, the vomit contains blood.

Other common symptoms of cancers that develop in the stomach may include:

  • Unexplained weight loss: Lack of appetite or unexplained weight loss is a common sign of cancer.
  • Stomach pain: Abdominal discomfort or pain in the abdomen above the navel may be a symptom of a stomach tumor. Also, swelling or fluid build-up in the abdomen may also be caused by stomach cancer.

Most of the time, stomach cancer isnt the reason for these symptomsthese are common discomforts that may be triggered by conditions such as an ulcer or a stomach virus, or even a heavy meal. Since many early-stage symptoms may easily be ignored or attributed to a more common cause, catching stomach cancer before it advances may be challenging.

Anyone experiencing early-stage stomach cancer symptoms that lack a known cause, or that seem to be worsening is urged to make a doctors appointment. Whether the symptoms are due to stomach cancer or something else, doctors may help identify the problem and treat it properly.

Warning Signs Of Stomach Cancer

Stomach cancer has a reputation for being one of the most painful forms of cancer. But for many sufferers, pain is not among the disease’s early warning signs.

In fact, the most common feature in the early stages may be that it causes no symptoms at all, says Umut Sarpel, MD, an associate professor and surgical oncologist at New York’s Mount Sinai Health System.

“We all get stomachaches from time to time, and that can make people worry about stomach cancer,” Dr. Sarpel says. “But it’s not one of the most common cancers, and in most cases, stomachaches or pain are not going to be the result of cancer.”

So how common is it? Roughly 1 in 111 adults will develop stomach cancer at some point in her lifetime, and the disease is more common among men, according to the American Cancer Society. Dr. Sarpel adds that a person’s risk for the disease goes up as she ages.

Stomach cancer is not typically an inherited disease. “The majority of gastric cancers are sporadic, or caused by random DNA mutations,” she says. While there is a super-rare genetic mutation associated with the disease, Dr. Sarpel says its not worth testing for that unless a lot of people in your family tree have had the disease.

So what should you be looking out for? These six symptoms.

What Are The Different Stages Of Stomach Cancer

Stomach cancer is staged based on the severity of cancerous cell growth and spread. Adenocarcinoma is initially evaluated by the tumor, node metastasis system.

  • T: How deeply has the tumor spread into the stomach wall?
  • N: Has the stomach cancer spread to the lymph nodes?
  • M: Has the stomach cancer spread to other parts of the body?

After the TNM staging information has been taken into account, the cancer is staged at 0 or 1 to 4. Tumor classifications for staging are as follows:

  • Stage 0 is early cancer on the surface of the stomach lining.
  • Stage 1A or 1B
  • Stage 2A or 2B, commonly with deeper stomach wall involved
  • Stage 3A or 3B or 3C, commonly with lymph node involvement
  • Stage 4 means cancer has metastasized elsewhere in the body outside of the stomach.

Problems With Your Bottom Or Bowel Movements

Changes in your bowel movements include diarrhoea, constipation and other changes to the usual timing, size, amount, consistency and frequency of your bowel movements. These symptoms are common, but you may be referred or offered checks for possible cancer if your GP doesn’t think they are caused by anything else, especially if you also have other symptoms or you are 60 or over.

If you are 60 or over and have changes in your bowel movements and your GP doesn’t think they are caused by anything else, you should be offered an appointment to see a cancer specialist within 2 weeks to check for cancer of the colon or rectum . If the changes to your bowel movements are diarrhoea or constipation and you have also lost weight, you may be offered a scan to check for cancer of the pancreas this scan should happen within 2 weeks. However, if you are under 60 and your bowel movements have changed, you should be offered a test to check for traces of blood in your faeces .

If you are a woman with symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome that started within the past year and you are 50 or over, you should be offered a blood test to check for cancer of the ovaries. You might also be offered this test if you have changes to your bowel movements, regardless of your age.

For more information on tests for blood in your faeces or a CA125 test see test results.

Total Gastrectomy Or Oesophagogastrectomy

Stomach Cancer – All Symptoms

If your cancer is in the middle or at the top of your stomach, you may need to have a total gastrectomy. If the cancer is close to the end of your oesophagus, where it meets your stomach, you may need to have an oesophagogastrectomy.

If you have a total gastrectomy, the end of your gullet will be joined to the top of your jejunum . If you have an oesophagogastrectomy, the remaining part of your gullet will be joined to your jejunum.

Early Warning Signs And Symptoms Of Stomach Cancer

The human stomach is a marvelous organ and the star component of the compound system of organs that makes up the gastrointestinal tract. It is through the stomach that the body begins the complex process of digestion, as well as the all-important processes of nutrient absorption and waste excretion.

The stomach itself can be said to be composed of several interconnected layers of muscle and other types of tissue. Gastric cancer, or stomach cancer as it is more commonly known, is a disease that develops when the cells that line the innermost layer of the stomach begin to grow uncontrollably into malignant tumors.

Stomach cancer is particularly insidious because of the ease with which it spreads into the deeper tissues of the stomach, out towards the outermost layers and, invariably, to other surrounding organs outside the stomach like the liver, spleen, pancreas.

Like most other types of cancer, when stomach cancer metastasizes, the patients quality of life, as well as their life expectancy, diminishes quite dramatically. Early detection of stomach tumors is, without a doubt, one of the most effective ways to improve the prognosis of affected patients. Therefore, it is crucial that we become familiar with all potential warning signs and symptoms of this disease

Here are the most common symptoms of stomach cancer:

Severe Stomach Pain After Eating A Fatty Meal

If you find yourself doubled over after eating a high-fat meal, you may be experiencing a gallbladder attack. “Women are especially prone to gallbladder disease,” says Hardeep Singh, MD, gastroenterologist from St. Joseph Hospital, Orange, CA. “Overweight women in their 40s are at highest risk.” The pain becomes worse after eating, lasts 30 to 60 minutes, and may come and go, becoming more constant and severe over time, says Singh.

Early Symptoms Are Commonlyoverlooked

Early stomach cancer symptoms are typically so unremarkable that they go completely unnoticed.

Stomach cancer is one of those tricky diagnoses where most people may have retrospectively felt symptoms, but theyre usually vague symptoms that can be confused with many other benign gastrointestinal disorders.

Some of these early symptoms include:

  • Bloating.
  • Nausea.
  • A general feeling of discomfort.

Because these symptoms tend to be dismissed as normal GI issues and they are for most people when stomach cancer is finally diagnosed, its often in the advanced stages.

How Can I Prevent Stomach Cancer

Gallbladder Cancer Symptoms You Might Ignore

Treat stomach infections. If you have ulcers from an H. pylori infection, get treatment. Antibiotics can kill the bacteria, and other drugs will heal the sores in the lining of your stomach to cut your risk of cancer.

Eat healthy. Get more fresh fruits and vegetables on your plate every day. Theyâre high in fiber and in some vitamins that can lower your cancer risk. Avoid very salty, pickled, cured, or smoked foods like hot dogs, processed lunch meats, or smoked cheeses. Keep your weight at a healthy level, too. Being overweight or obese can also raise your risk of the disease.

Donât smoke. Your stomach cancer risk doubles if you use tobacco.

Watch aspirin or NSAID use. If you take daily aspirin to prevent heart problems or NSAID drugs for arthritis, talk to your doctor about how these drugs might affect your stomach.

Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms: Location Matters

Initially, pancreatic cancer tends to be silent and painless as it grows. By the time it’s large enough to cause symptoms, pancreatic cancer has generally grown outside the pancreas. Because of the location of the pancreas in the body, symptoms include:

  • Jaundice. As pancreatic cancer blocks duct that releases bile into the intestine , the ingredients of bile build up in the blood. This turns the skin and the eyes yellow, a condition called jaundice. The same blockage causes dark urine, light colored stools, and itching.
  • Abdominal pain. Pancreatic cancer can cause a dull ache in the upper abdomen radiating to the back. The pain may come and go.
  • Back pain.
  • Bloating. Some people with pancreatic cancer have a sense of early fullness with meals or an uncomfortable swelling in the abdomen.
  • Nausea.
  • Vomiting.

In general, symptoms appear earlier from cancers in the head of the pancreas, compared to those in the body and tail. Keep in mind that having any or all of these symptoms doesnât mean a person has pancreatic cancer. There are many other causes for these types of symptoms.

What Are The Main Causes Of Stomach Cancer

There is no single cause of stomach cancer and sometimes it happens without any known risk factors. Lifestyle choices can increase the likelihood of stomach cancer. However, those who experience long-term stomach inflammation from either lifestyle choices or chronic illness are at higher risk.

The are often related to a medical history that includes:

  • H. pylori bacterial infections: A common stomach infection that often causes ulcers.
  • Tumors: Other tumors occurring elsewhere in the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Stomach polyps: Abnormal tissue growth in the stomach lining.
  • Stomach reflex

There are lifestyle changes you can make that may decrease your risk of stomach cancer. These include:

  • Having a healthy diet and avoiding
  • Processed foods
  • Salted foods or increased sodium
  • Being physically active
  • Cooking and storing food properly
  • Avoiding alcohol abuse
  • Risk factors for stomach cancer that you cannot change, include:

    • Your age
    • Being male
    • Being of Asian, South American or Belarusian descent
    • Having a family history of stomach cancer
    • Having a history of stomach surgery
    • Having pernicious anemia, which is a vitamin deficiency that may be related to either lifestyle or disease

Lumps Or Swelling In Your Abdomen

If you have a lump or swelling in your abdomen, you might be offered an appointment to see a cancer specialist within 2 weeks. Whether or not you are offered this appointment and which type of cancer they will check for will depend on other symptoms you have. For example, if your GP thinks your lump is being caused by a swollen spleen, you might be referred to check for a type of cancer called nonHodgkin’s lymphoma, but this might depend on other symptoms that you have. If your lump is in the upper part of the abdomen and your GP thinks stomach cancer is possible, then you might be referred to check for this.

If you are a woman and your GP examines your abdomen and finds a lump, and doesn’t think it is caused by fibroids in your womb, you should be referred to see a specialist within 2 weeks to check for cancer of the ovaries.

If your GP thinks the lump is caused by swelling of both the liver and spleen, you may be offered a blood test to check for leukaemia this blood test, called a full blood count, should be carried out within 2 days.

If the lump or swelling is just in the upper part of your abdomen, and your GP thinks this might be being caused by an enlarged liver or gall bladder, you may be offered a scan to check for any signs of cancer in these organs. This should be carried out within 2 weeks.

Clues That Your Cancer Has Spread

Stomach Cancer, Causes, Signs and Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment.

Symptoms may be different or more intense if your cancer has metastasized to other parts of your body.

Here are some common symptoms of cancer that has spread:

    • Bone metastasis Cancer that has spread to the bones may cause joint pain or fractures.
    • Liver metastasis If your disease has invaded your liver, you might experience jaundice and swelling in your abdomen.
    • Brain metastasis When cancer metastasizes to the brain, symptoms may include headaches, speech difficulties, blurred vision, or dizziness.
    • Lung metastasis Cancer that has spread to the lungs may trigger shortness of breath or a persistent cough.

What Are The Different Types Of Stomach Cancer

Stomach cancer, also known as , is the name for a category of cancer. There are many different types of stomach cancer:

    • Adenocarcinoma: Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of gastric cancer, comprising more than 90% of all stomach cancers. Carcinoma that occurs in the innermost lining of the stomach.
    • : Cancer of the immune system that accounts for 4% of all stomach cancer, which is not from the mucosa of the stomach lining. It is broken up into primary and secondary lymphoma of the stomach.
    • Primary lymphoma involves the stomach and can eventually affect the lymph nodes, bone marrow and other parts of the body.
    • Secondary lymphoma initially involves other parts of the body, like circulating blood, lymph nodes, bone marrow and other organs. Secondarily, cancer spreads to the stomach.
  • Gastrointestinal Stroma Tumor: A kind of soft tissue sarcoma that can grow in the stomachs connective tissue.
  • Neuroendocrine cancer: Also known as carcinoid tumors, neuroendocrine cancer originates from cells in the intestines endocrine and nervous systems.
