How Neck Arthritis Is Diagnosed

Can Pain Relief Creams/Ointments Help Your Neck, Back, Shoulder, Knee, or Hip Pain?

Your doctor will start by taking a history and doing a physical exam. Theyll check the range of motion in your neck and test your strength, sensation, and reflexes to find out if there is pressure on your nerves or spinal cord. Theyll ask when your symptoms started, when the pain happens, and what makes the pain better and worse.

Your doctor may order an X-ray to assess alignment and look for arthritic changes, says Dr. Shah. If there is a concern of compression of spinal nerves or the spinal cord, you may need an MRI to look at the neutral structure and discs, says Dr. Shah.

A CT scan may be ordered to look at the bone more closely, especially to see if any bony outgrowths are causing compression. However, X-rays and MRIs are the tests that are usually ordered, says Dr. Shah. A CT scan with a myelogram may be used if an MRI cant be done.

An electromyography, or EMG, may be ordered to assess for nerve compression, says Dr. Shah. An EMG tests the electrical conduction of the nerves in the arms. This test would be helpful if you have multiple nerves being compressed or compression of nerves at the neck and in the arm, he says.

Your doctor may order blood tests to see if you have any antibodies or systemic inflammation that would reveal inflammatory arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, or ankylosing spondylitis.

What Are The Complications

Cervical spondylosis can be complicated by myelopathy or radiculopathy, although cervical disc prolapse, plexopathy, motor neurone disease, or other diseases can cause similar symptoms magnetic resonance imaging, electrodiagnostic tests, and other investigations may be needed to exclude other diagnoses. Neurological complications can occur in established cervical spondylosis or can be the presenting feature of the disease.

Myelopathy causes clumsiness of the hands or gait disturbance, or both, as a result of sensory ataxia or spastic paraparesis of the lower limbs, with bladder dysfunction being a late symptom. Examination of the upper limbs may show an increase in tone, with a pronator catch or increased tone in finger flexors . Wasting and fasciculation of biceps or triceps are occasional findings. The lower limbs usually show an increase in tone with spasticity, but little true weakness. Tendon reflexes are characteristic, with reduced or even inverted biceps or supinator jerks , and an increase in triceps jerks, finger jerks, and all lower limb reflexes, with upgoing plantar responses. A positive Hoffman’s sign and ankle clonus are also common findings. Sensory changes vary, but tend to affect vibration and joint position sense in the hands more than the feet.

Who Gets Neck Pain

About two thirds of the population have neck pain at some time in their lives,w5w6 and prevalence is highest in middle age. In a general practice survey of adults in the United Kingdom, 25% of women and 20% of men reported current neck pain.w7 In a Norwegian survey of 10000 adults, 34% of responders had experienced neck pain in the previous year.w8 After back pain, neck pain is the most frequent musculoskeletal cause of consultation in primary care worldwide. In the UK about 15% of hospital based physiotherapy and in Canada 30% of chiropractic referrals are for neck pain.w9w10 Epidemiological studies of neck pain are mostly based on questionnaire or population surveys and may overestimate the frequency of the condition. Despite these methodological difficulties, they do provide evidence that neck pain places a heavy burden on individuals, employers, and healthcare services.

Signs Your Knee Pain Comes From Your Spine

Are Knee Pain and Running Related?

Unless you have suffered a traumatic injury to your knees, the knee pain you feel is not an inflammation or a problem with your joints. Most likely, the discomfort in your knees is a symptom of the underlying cause and theres a good chance your spine is the real culprit.

Here are four signs that can help you determine if your knee pain is a sign of a spinal condition:

Cervical Stenosis And Hip Pain

Rumruay/Shutterstock

Cervical stenosis is when the hole for the spinal cord in the neck bones becomes too small due to wear-and-tear arthritis. The discs, facets, or joints called uncovertebral can place pressure on the cord . Since the job of the spinal cord is to carry signals to and from the body to the brain, placing pressure on the cord can result in a disruption of those signals.

Its sometimes hard for patients to understand how pressure in the neck can make someone believe that a distant area is hurting however, a light-bulb-wiring analogy may help. If you mess with the wires that go to a light bulb at any point from the switch to the bulb, the bulb will go out.

From the perspective of the bulb, all it knows is that its not working. Its ignorant to whether the issue is at the connection with the bulb, halfway there, or right after the switch. In the same way, pressure on the nerves at any point from the hip to the brain will be perceived by the brain as being in the hip.

The upshot? Can your neck cause hip pain? Yes. I now know this intuitively, which is a bit different from knowing it academically. My issue is managed well by using platelet lysate epidurals to keep the nerves and spinal cord in tip-top shape and avoiding certain positions I know cause my bone spurs to bump into my spinal cord. In the meantime, I lead a normal and very active life without surgery!

Three Signs That Your Knee Pain May Be Originating In Your Back

by Harbor View | Mar 3, 2016 | back, knee, nerves, Uncategorized |

Just about everything you think you know about your knee pain probably is wrong. Most physicians hold fast to what they learned in medical school, but the science of medicine is constantly evolvingfinding less invasive ways to treat our ailments and discovering the root causes of our pain.

An important thing to understand is that what hurts is not necessarily the problem, but a symptom of the problem. If your knee pain isnt the result of traumatic injury, a strong possibility exists that it could be caused by a problem in your back. Not determining the root cause of your pain could lead to an unnecessary knee replacement that doesnt address the source of the pain. Research studies consistently show an unacceptably high percentage of patients continue to have chronic pain after knee-replacement surgeries.

Your back houses the nerves that drive the muscles around the knees. A problem with a nerve in your back can affect how those muscles work. Low-level nerve irritation usually isnt noticed by patients as back or leg pain. It just causes the muscles to misfire, destroying the otherwise needed protection for the knee joint.

There are three signs that your back could be causing your knee pain.

Knee Pain As A Symptom Of Lung Cancer

Top 5 Signs Your Shoulder, Hip, or Knee Pain, Is NOT Arthritis

Both monoarthritis and polyarthritis have been identified as possible signs of lung cancer. Sometimes, these symptoms can be misdiagnosed.

The connection between knee pain and lung cancer can easily be missed because the rate of arthritis problems occurring with lung cancer is very low.

  • Arthritis symptoms due to a paraneoplastic syndrome occur in approximately 0.24% of lung cancer patients.
  • HPOA incidents among lung cancer patients range from 0.72% to 17%.
  • Researches have only reported 48 cases of synovial metastasis, and only a fraction of those incidents are related to knee pain.

If you have lung cancer, your knee pain is more likely to be related to other causes and is rarely a symptom of your lung cancer.

If you have rheumatoid arthritis , your knee pain is likely related to your arthritis. However, you should discuss your risk of lung cancer with your doctor. Those with RA are eight times more likely to develop interstitial lung disease, which puts you at risk for lung cancer.

Chronic Stress And Long

Aches and pains are common symptoms of stress, however, ongoing pain or stiffness may be a sign of a more serious problem.

A 2018 study published by PubMed revealed Stress-related disorders were significantly associated with risk of subsequent autoimmune disease.

Autoimmune diseases cause your immune system to produce antibodies which attack and damage the bodys healthy tissue instead of fighting infection. In certain conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, the antibodies attach to connective tissue within the joints leading to pain, stiffness, swelling, andwithout treatmentpotentially permanent joint damage.

Autoimmune diseases are often incurable however, early intervention and treatment can help prevent further damage and joint deterioration.

Foot Pain Caused By A Spinal Problem

Nerve root irritation or compression in the lumbar or sacral spine may cause sciatica pain to radiate down your leg and into the foot.1 Specifically, compression of the S1 nerve root, also called classic sciatica, can cause pain along the outer side of your foot.2

Nerve roots may be compressed or irritated due to a number of causes. Common examples include3:

The inability to lift the front part of your foot or frequent tripping while walking may be due to a condition called foot drop. This condition is typically caused due to compression of the L5 nerve root. Rarely, compression of the L4 and/or S1 nerve roots may also cause foot drop.4

Does Back Pain Cause Knee Pain

As one of the most complex joints in the body, the knee allows the entire leg to move, flex, and have a good range of motion. Meanwhile, with its vertebrae and shock-absorbing discs, the back has a myriad of responsibilities it holds you physically together and secures the high-speed conduit for your complex and delicate nervous system.

Together, the knees and the back provide flexibility, motion, and support. However, they also rely on each other to maintain balance and equilibrium. Therefore, when your back hurts, so might your knees.

How Can I Know If I Have Sciatica

Knee Pain

Sciatica is linked to certain conditions including pregnancy, osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease, and herniated or bulging discs. Doctors who suspect their patients have sciatica may ask their patients to perform some exercises or undergo x-rays and similar tests.

Physicians will also ask questions several questions including:

  • Where do you feel discomfort?
  • What is the pain like?
  • How often are you uncomfortable?
  • How long does the pain last?
  • What triggers the discomfort and what helps it go away?
  • Do you sit for a long period of time?
  • Do you do any lifting or strenuous physical activities for your job?
  • Do you have an active lifestyle?

How Does The Body Respond To Stress

When faced with danger, a chemical reaction occurs in your body which allows you to act quickly. This reaction, also known as the fight-or-flight or stress response, is your bodys way of keeping you safe from harm. Unfortunatelythe body cant always discern between a legitimate threat and the pressure of daily life.

Any stressful situationfrom narrowly avoiding a head-on collision to being stuck in a traffic jamcan trigger this response causing the heart rate to increase, blood pressure to rise, and muscles to tighten.

Symptoms Of Stress And Anxiety

Stress can wreak havoc on your mind and body. In small doses, the stress response can improve alertness and sharpen senses however, chronic stress can lead to serious problems such as cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal problems, and autoimmune disease. Be sure to talk to your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms on an ongoing basis.

Mental/Emotional Symptoms:

  • Frequent colds or infections

Your Hips Or Quadriceps Feel Weak

Your quads are a group of muscles located at the front of your thigh. The three vastus muscles and rectus femoris make your thighs, one of the most powerful parts of the body, as they allow you to extend your knees and move your hips.

On the other hand, each hip is a ball-and-socket joint responsible for bearing most of your bodys weight. The hips have many ligament attachments for stability and muscular attachments to help control the motion of your leg and knee joints. The rectus femoris muscle crosses over from the quads and connects to the hip so if a problem occurs with the quad muscles, your hips will be affected.

Now, the parts of the human body are connected like a chain. Even if you didnt experience an injury or a major trauma to your hips and quadriceps, you may suddenly feel like youre unable to move them at full strength. This is a condition that may be caused by a spinal problem since the nerves that control the motor functions of the quads are located between the vertebrae of the lumbar spine.

If those nerves become irritated or get pinched by the vertebrae, the movement of your hips and quads will be affected. Weakness in these areas will cause the knee joints to work harder and wear out faster, which explains the knee pain you might be feeling.

How Do I Treat Cervical Spondylosis Complicated By Neurological Abnormality

Side Sleeping WRONG Can Cause Neck, Shoulder, Back, Hip, or Knee Pain GIVEAWAY!

Most patients with neurological abnormality will need magnetic resonance imaging of the cervical spine at an early stage, particularly if they have progressive myelopathy, radiculopathy, or intractable pain. Neurosurgical intervention also needs to be considered, but the outcome of decompressive surgery is often disappointing, especially for myelopathy complicating cervical spondylosis. While progression of the neurological deficit may be slowed by surgery, lost function may not recover or symptoms may progress at a later date. Poor outcome after surgery may reflect irreversible damage to the cervical cord ) or compromise to the vascular supply to the cord.

Could It Be Your Back Causing Your Knee Pain

An important thing to understand is that what hurts is not necessarily the problem, but a symptom of the problem. For knees, the first thing to consider if knee pain isnt the result of traumatic injury is, are issues in your back causing your knee pain? Not determining the root cause of your pain could sadly result in a shiny, new knee replacement that doesnt actually address the source of your pain. And as weve seen in research studies, an unacceptably high percentage of patients still have chronic pain after knee replacement.

How To Know If Your Knee Pain Comes From Your Spine

Many people assume knee pain is always caused by a problem in the knee joints. However, that is not necessarily the case. If youre suffering knee pain or discomfort, there is a possibility that a problem with your spine is the cause.

So how do you know if your knee pain comes from your spine? The muscles around your knees are connected to the nerves in your lower spine so if these nerves are irritated or compressed, your knees may be affected by symptoms such as intermittent back pain, hamstring tightness, weakness in the hips or quads, and the development of bunions on your feet.

  • Lack of ease of movement.
  • Unable to be flexible.
  • Not wanting to bend, usually to authority.

What Do I Need To Know About Neck Anatomy

Can Your Chiropractor Alleviate Knee Pain? â Dr Brandon ...

You dont need to memorize the physiology and anatomy of your neck to improve its function and reduce pain, but its helpful to have a general understanding of your cervical spine.

Neck mobility is matchless. Although you wont get any Exorcist-style head spinning, it is capable of moving the head in many directions: 90° of flexion , 90° of extension , 180° of rotation , and almost 120° of tilt to either shoulder.

But all that mobility comes at the cost of complexity. First youve got your seven vertebrae , each cushioned by an intervertebral disc and connected by facet joints. There are also 32 muscles, plus the tendons that attach them to bones, that help move and stabilize the neck, as well as a number of ligaments attaching bones to each other. Thats a lot of action in a comparatively small area.

Avoid Cold And Hot Beverages And Food

Your teeth are sensitive right now because your nerves are exposed to anything they come into contact with. That means that there is usually a layer of protection between your tooths nerves and anything very hot or really cold that you put in your mouth. Without that protection, you are feeling that hot or cold so intensely that it becomes pain. Its like brain freeze for your tooth, only way worse.

So pass on hot and cold food and beverages. Brushing your teeth with warm water instead of cold may also be helpful. However, you can apply a cold compress or ice to the outside of your cheek to help with pain and inflammation. Just dont let it come too close to your damaged tooth.

    What Causes An Exposed Nerve

Can I Still Have Pain After a Root Canal?

When teeth are healthy, an enamel protects the soft underlying dentin layer with the roots protected by the gums. But when this enamel is worn down, damaged or if the gums have receded, the soft dentin gets exposed. This triggers pain because the dentin is connected to the nerves which lead to the tooths pulp.

Dentin contains many thousands of tiny channels that lead to the pulp. When these channels or tubules are exposed, they allow cold, heat and acidic substances to reach the sensitive nerves inside the teeth causing pain that can be extremely severe.

This sensitivity to temperature as is what makes eating and drinking so painful and difficult when your teeth are damaged. And it is not only eating and drinking that that causes issues even breathing in cold air can cause a sharp pain making you wince.

After each break, continue to apply the compress to the pained area as needed.Make sure that the area has returned to a normal temperature before reapplying the compress. You may otherwise damage surrounding tissue.

Why Is Toothache Worse At Night

Toothache stimulates your dental nerves to an intense degree and this contributes to why it can be more severe at night. This nerve stimulation activates your brain and can keep you awake. And sometimes the anxiety from staying awake can disrupt your sleep even more. In some cases what you eat for dinner might aggravate a painful tooth. Food that is very hot, cold, sugary, acidic or starchy can quickly make an underlying toothache issue worse. Its often true that at night, without the distraction of daily activities, pain can seem more obvious and feel worse. Sometimes toothache gets worse when you lie down because blood rushes to your head, which then puts extra pressure on the already sensitive areas in your mouth.

    How Toothache Pain Spreads

    Common Toothache Causes And Types

The real pain behind a toothache doesnt end there. While trauma to other parts of your body causes an increased blood supply to promote healing, your dental pulp has limited space and low vascularity . And, unlike muscle tightness or a soft tissue injury, you cant massage, rest, compress, or elevate a tooth thats throbbing. And, if that werent enough, your teeth and mouth are also directly innervated from your brain , lending to strong communication with your brains pain receptors. Put another way, the large cranial nerve that supplies your mouth and teeth with feeling originates from your brain and sends strong signals to your brains pain centers. In short, your teeth just dont do well with pain!

Toothaches are often caused by decay, trauma, or gum disease which, if left untreated, can lead to more serious conditions or to tooth loss. Though a toothache should be evaluated by your dentist as soon as possible, you can find relief at home while youre waiting for your next appointment. Here are 10 home remedies that can help bring relief from a bothersome toothache.

Why Does My Toothache Come And Go

Sometimes, pain is responding to a temporary stimulus, like hot, cold, or sugar, as in the case of root sensitivities or cavities. Other times, it might be an abscess flaring up and then healing enough that the pain subsides, even if the infection itself isnt completely gone.

Cracked teeth also often have acute pain that fades and recurs as the pulp inside the tooth gets irritated or infected, heals, and then gets irritated again.

Factors That Lead To Tooth Sensitivity And Nerve Exposure

    • Brushing your teeth too hard : can wear down the enamel over time.
    • Gum disease : inflammation in the gums or gingivitis can cause the roots to become exposed.
    • Receding gums : as gums recede from the teeth, the roots and nerves become exposed.
    • Cracked teeth : teeth that are cracked or chipped may fill up with bacteria which enters the pulp causing great pain.
    • Grinding your teeth : this can wear the enamel down and expose the soft dentin underneath.
    • Plaque : Plaque on the root surface may cause sensitivity,
    • Acidic food : regularly eating food with a high acid content can cause the enamel to erode and leave dentin exposed.

  • How To Identify Tooth Nerve Damage

One of the most common causes of tooth pain is nerve damage surrounding the teeth. When the nerve becomes damaged, it can become especially sensitive to any level of movement of the tooth, as well as to extremely cold or hot temperatures. This can make eating most foods very uncomfortable.

There are two primary causes of tooth nerve pain:

    • Pulpal sensitivity: This is pain caused by damage to the nerves surrounding the pulp of a single tooth. When this type of pain develops it typically will stick to one tooth. Common causes of this include a chipped or cracked tooth, tooth decay, and in some instances, can develop following dental work, including a recent tooth filling. This type of sensitivity can also develop as a result of prolonged clenching or grinding of the teeth.
    • Dental sensitivity: The other type of sensitivity is dental sensitivity, which affects more of the mouth than just surrounding one single tooth. This type of nerve damage will occur when the tooth enamel becomes damaged, potentially as a result of a chip or a crack, but also potentially as a result of erosion. This allows external stimuli to access the nerves of the teeth, which means that eating foods that are particularly hot, cold or acidic can cause severe pain throughout the mouth. One of the largest causes of dental sensitivity is the repeated use of teeth whitening products, which breaks down the enamel of the tooth and leaves your teeth open to damage.

FIX Sternocleidomastoid (SCM) Muscle Neck Pain, Headaches & Jaw Pain With This Stretch!

TMJ and TMD are essentially interchangeable terms for the same problem. The temporomandibular joint is the hinge in your jaw connecting the jaw to your skull. Itâs what allows you to move your jaw up and down to eat and talk. Any problem with this joint is technically referred to as a temporomandibular disorder. But these problems are more commonly referred to as temporomandibular joint syndrome, or TMJ disorder. Weâll use these terms interchangeably, as people may refer to the disorder as either one. They mean the same thing.

Do You Have A Cervicogenic Headache

The relationship between a chronic headache and neck pain or stiffness is usually more obvious and more easily diagnosed than between dizziness and neck problems.

To put things into perspective, this relationship goes both wayswhich means that neck pain can be caused by a neurological problem, or you could experience a headache because of the problems in the cervical area.

The second case is called cervicogenic headache .

CGH surfaces as a deep, chronic headache. The pain usually starts out in the back of the head, and progresses towards the frontal lobe. It must be noted that the pain usually resides unilaterally, or only on one side of the head.

Here are some of the common symptoms of cervicogenic headaches:

  • The headache only resides on one side of the head/face
  • The pain is steady, not impulsive
  • The pain starts out in the back of the head, and progresses towards the front
  • Instances of chronic pain can last for hours to days
  • The neck is stiff
  • The neck hurts upon movement

Cervicogenic headache can feel similar to a migraine, which is why the two are often confused. Most instances of cervicogenic headaches are triggered by a sudden neck movement, but the underlying causes are usually systematic.

Here are some of the most common causes for this type of headache:

  • Problems with the bones in your neck
  • Joint wear-and-tear
  • Arthritis

What Kind Of Pain Is It

Tooth pain can sometimes be difficult to pinpoint. You may experience a radiating ache or nagging pain in your teeth, jaw, ear, forehead, face, or neck. You may also have trouble determining where exactly its coming from. Your symptoms may help provide clues. These could include:

  • sudden, sharp pain in one or more teeth while running or upon exertion
  • sensitivity to temperature changes, such as hot and cold
  • persistent, dull ache, ranging from mild to severe
  • pulsating, intense pain, which may be accompanied by swelling

Some causes of tooth pain include:

How Can I Prevent A Toothache

Since most toothaches are the result of tooth decay, good oral hygiene practices can prevent toothaches:

  • Brush regularly with a fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss at least once a day.
  • See your dentist twice a year for professional cleaning.

Also, eat foods low in sugar and ask your dentist about sealants and fluoride applications.

TMJ Causes

TMJ Relief

Do you have TMJ pain?

It could be your sternocleidomastoid muscle.

The Temporomandibular Joint, or TMJ, is considered one of the most complicated joints in the human body.

It is estimated to open and close up to 2000 times per day.

The TMJ is a primary component in breathing, chewing, swallowing, talking and yawning, so pain and dysfunction in this area can have extensive impact.

The sternocleidomastoid is one of the main pain areas and/or contributors.

HELPFUL TIP: One thing we tried recently was massaging magnesium oil directly into the TMJ joint and SCM muscle. The brand we tried is called PURE Magnesium Oil Spray but any 100% brand should work.

Tailoring Treatment To Your Needs

TMJ treatment can be very effective in relieving painful symptoms, including headaches and neck and shoulder pain. The key is to have treatment as early as possible, before inflammation in the jaw joint becomes severe. And its also very important to select a treatment thats tailored to whats causing joint irritation in the first place.

As a neuromuscular dentist, Dr. Scott Young is skilled in diagnosing the underlying cause of TMJ and in creating custom treatment plans focused on achieving optimal results. Many patients benefit from a custom-fit mouth guard thats worn at night to prevent jaw strain caused by clenching and grinding habits. The guard provides a cushion for your teeth so stress on the muscles is relieved, and it also protects the surfaces of your teeth so grinding and clenching wont damage them. For most TMJ patients, Dr. Young recommends a special mouth guard used to treat migraines. Because the guard only covers the front teeth, its more comfortable than larger mouth guards commonly used in TMJ treatment, but its just as effective. Fitting and fabrication of the guard can be completed in a single office visit.

Other treatment options include physical therapy and gentle stretching to relieve inflammation and muscle stress, nerve stimulation to relax the jaw muscles, and biofeedback therapy to help reduce stress. If your teeth are badly damaged or very poorly aligned, other treatments may be recommended to help restore a normal bite balance.

Do I Have Tmj Disorder

If, after reading through this guide, you think you may be suffering from TMJ, you should schedule an immediate trip to the dentist to be evaluated and diagnosed. The sooner you get an appointment, the sooner you can begin treating your TMD symptoms.

How Do You Cure Tmd

This depends upon the root cause of your TMJ pain. In cases of an injury or other temporary causes, simply resting the joint or using specialized exercises to strengthen the muscles around it can help reduce or eliminate your pain. If the cause of your TMJ tooth pain and sensitivity is because youre clenching or grinding your teeth, you can focus on lowering your stress and anxiety levels or wear a night guard to prevent yourself from grinding your teeth at night. You can also try a splint, which keeps your jaw in its ideal position overnight to keep from stressing it too much, or you can receive orthodontic treatments to resolve issues with a misaligned bite. In more extreme cases, surgery can be performed on the joint itself, but these surgeries should always be a last resort because the outcome isnt guaranteed, and they can cause a fair amount of pain for you during the healing process.

Headaches Caused By Bruxism

FIX This Neck Muscle Imbalance To Stop Neck Pain And Headaches

Bruxism refers to teeth grinding or clenching. Many people unconsciously perform this behavior, for example, while they are sleeping or stressed. Bruxism reportedly leads to dull pain in the head, often starting behind the eyes and wrapping around the head.

This may be accompanied by sore jaw muscles and a clicking sound in the jaw joint when a person tries to open or close their mouth. Another problem with bruxism is that the clenching and grinding can wear down the enamel, which increases the risk of decay and damage as mentioned above.

People with bruxism can benefit from a tailor-made mouthguard crafted by a dentist. Wearing this at night cushions the teeth, helping to prevent headaches and toothaches.

However, the cure for bruxism depends on the underlying cause. While a mouth guard helps prevent toothaches and headaches, it doesnt cure the cause. Possible treatments include Botox injections to relax the muscles in the jaw or medication for stress and anxiety.

Headaches And Your Oral Health

We do not often associate headaches with dental problems. Consequently, finding out headaches may be connected to your tooth alignment may come as a surprise to some patients. TMJ disorder is an oral health condition involving jaw pain issues. Your TMJs, or jaw hinge joints, allow you to move you lower mandible. These hinge joints become exhausted from attempting to hold misaligned teeth in the correct position. As a result of jaw muscle overexertion, you may experience teeth grinding, which can lead to numerous dental health problems, such as tooth sensitivity and increased cavities.

What Is Myofascial Pain Syndrome

Jaw Pain Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, and Treatment

The fascia is a thin connective tissue that encases your muscles, holding them together. This allows your muscles to stretch and contract and function properly. Organs and blood vessels are also surrounded by fascia, which is a complex substance composed primarily of collagen.

Myofascial pain syndrome is pain associated with a muscle trigger point that causes pain in another area thats distant from the trigger point. MFP is a common cause of chronic pain in different parts of the body. Because you may not feel pain in the muscle itself, symptoms can be misleading. This makes recognition and proper management crucial.

An issue with a muscle in your neck can cause head and neck pain, affecting the teeth, sinuses, cheeks, or jaw. If careful evaluation of your teeth rules out dental issues as the origin of your pain, you may have MFP. It may feel like a deep, dull, aching pain in your tooth. As well, a knot in your neck that feels tender could very well be the trigger point for your tooth pain.

The Gateway To The Rest Of Your Body

Its important to note that what happens in the mouth can contribute to symptoms elsewhere in the body. This is often overlooked with people treating the symptoms but not the cause. This is when an oral check up can provide the answers youve been looking for.

The problem might be as simple as grinding your teeth. In actual fact, up to 80 percent of people who experience pain at the back of their head and neck fit into this category. Headaches can also stem from this problem.

Conventional Treatments Of Neck Pain And Associated Symptoms

Treating neck pain often begins with simply taking over-the-counter painkillers and temporarily eliminating painful activities. Applying heat or cold to the area can help with pain management as well. It may also be recommended that a patient take anti-nausea or anti-dizziness medication. Like NSAIDs, these over the counter nausea treatments can be found in most drug and big box stores.

If the initial steps of treatment fail to reduce pain, there are other treatment options that doctors may recommend to alleviate symptoms. These include:

Many treatment options exist and can be used in combination based on a patients individual needs. There is one more important treatment option that should be considered, Regenerative Medicine.

Other Symptoms Of Tmj Disorder

In addition, TMJ disorder causes your jaw muscles to pull on other parts of your body like the top of your head, your neck, and your shoulders. This can result in muscle aches, chronic headaches, and even inner ear pain. Dizziness, jaw popping, and difficulty opening your mouth are other symptoms of TMJ disorder.

Why Does My Tooth Hurt After Completing Dental Treatment

How Your Shoulder Causes Neck Pain & Headaches

Our bodys are intricately connected. Many people are unaware of the work our jaw muscles do to help us chew, open our mouth wide, etc. The TMJ pain comes from the soft tissues that attach to the bone.

When a dentist places a restoration on a tooth, she or he generally needs to remove some tooth structure and decay before filling the tooth. There are three layers to your teeth. Enamel is the hardest layer and makes up the outside layer of your tooth. The middle layer is Dentin. Dentin is what gives your tooth its yellow color. And the inside layer is called the Pulp. The nerve of the tooth is in the Pulp and extends into the roots of your tooth.

When your dentist places a filling, usually part of the enamel and dentin layers are removed. This can cause some irritation to the nerve of the tooth. This irritation can cause cold or hot sensitivity. The more tooth structure that is removed, the higher chance that the nerve could become irritated. This is why it is very important to see your dentist regularly for a check-up. If you have a cavity in the tooth, it will continue to get bigger and bigger over time. The larger the cavity, the higher chance for temperature sensitivity after the filling is placed.

There are several reasons why a tooth could hurt after dental treatment. The most common complaint is temperature sensitivity in the tooth directly following a filling or crown. Your dentist can address questions and solutions for this.

Treatment For Compressed Cervical Nerve

Usually you do not need any treatment for compressed nerve in your neck as it resolves on its own. Severe cases may require surgery. Here are some treatment options to improve your symptoms.

Nonsurgical Treatment

These treatment options do not require any surgical intervention.

  • Soft cervical collar: You have to wear this padded ring around your neck to limit neck movement. This helps your neck muscles relax. Limited movement will reduce pressure on the nerve.
  • Physical therapy: You may have to go for physical therapy to understand how to perform certain exercises to strengthen your neck muscles. This will help improve range of motion and relieve pain as well.
  • Medications: Your doctor will prescribe NSAIDs like ibuprofen, aspirin, or naproxen, Oral corticosteroids, Steroid injection or Narcotics to help improve your symptoms, to relieve pain and inflammation.

Surgical Treatment

If nonsurgical treatment options do not work, your doctor may recommend surgery. There are a number of surgical procedures such as anterior cervical diskectomy and fusion , artificial disk replacement and posterior cervical laminoforaminotomy for pinched nerve in neck. Your doctor will consider a number of factors, such as your symptoms, your medical history, etc. to determine the best surgical procedure.

What Causes Muscle Cramping Under The Chin

When theres something wrong with your TMJ, the muscles around your jaw all begin to work overtime to compensate this causes a chain reaction, potentially overworking the muscles around your jaw, head, neck, shoulders, and even your back. This can result in pain, stiff muscles, and muscle spasms in these areas, including the muscles under your chin.

The symptoms of TMD can be wide-ranging and debilitating, impacting everything from your sleep schedule to your social life. It takes a little work to figure out whats causing your pain and to find a treatment that works for you, but with a little perseverance, you can reclaim an active, pain-free life!

Is It True That Wisdom Teeth Can Cause Headaches And Neck Pain

In short, absolutely. As wisdom teeth slowly grow into maturation, they can have some potentially significantand painfuleffects on the rest of your body. With decreased room to grow, wisdom teeth create natural tension. This slowly building tension can spread from your gums, into your jaw, and across other areas of your body.

Pinched Nerve From Degeneration And Bone Spurs

Pin on Trigger Point Self

In middle aged and older people, the degenerativedisc disease can cause bone spurs to form around the nerve roots. This usuallyoccurs inside the foramen the opening in the cervical spine where the nerveroot leaves the spine to travel into the arm. If these bone spurs get big enoughthey may begin to rub on the nerve root and irritate the nerve root. This causesthe same symptoms as a herniated disc. The irritation causes pain to run downthe arm, numbness to occur in the areas the nerve provides sensation to andweakness in the muscles that the nerve supplies.

What Can You Do About Cgd Or Cgh

The most important question to ask yourself is: what can you do about it? Luckily, there are a number of ways to approach this problem. As with many pain disorders, solutions in regards to cervicogenic dizziness and cervicogenic headache may start with lifestyle changes. In particular, your posture and your activity level will affect your symptoms.

If youre suffering from moderate to high levels of dizziness or headaches, then it might make sense to explore treatment options that will produce more immediate results.

Physical therapy has been proven to be very effective in long-term treatment of both cervicogenic headache and cervicogenic dizziness. However, physical therapy will not produce overnight results, but will allow patients to reduce their symptoms over a period of time. Massage therapy may be used in combination to reduce symptoms.

For those who are suffering from severe headaches or dizziness even more immediate treatment options may be needed.

In those cases your physician may prescribe a medication regimen or refer you for a surgical consultation. However, surgical intervention rarely provides long-term benefits. In fact, most surgeries only offer temporary pain relief.

Lets explore each available option in more detail.

Lifestyle Changes

One of the most important things that you should monitor in your daily activities is your posture.

Luckily, there are several methods you could use to fix your posture.

How To Treat Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Without Surgery

How to Fix Carpal Tunnel in Both Hands Naturally

Im writing this article for people who want to avoid carpal tunnel surgery. Yes, I am a hand surgeon but Im also a physician, and part of our jobs as physicians is to educate patients about prevention of disease. Hopefully I can teach people about ways to reduce the risk of carpal tunnel syndrome and provide options for treatment prior to requiring surgery. As a disclaimer, patients who have severe carpal tunnel syndrome should be evaluated promptly and not delay treatment unnecessarily. Constant numbness in the hand and loss of muscle mass at the base of the thumb are signs of nerve damage and severe CTS. Surgery is the best way to prevent the nerve from being damaged irreversibly. If people wait too long before having surgery, some of the hand numbness can be permanent. Also, not all hand pain, numbness, and tingling are caused by CTS. If your symptoms are progressive, severe, or not responding to treatment, get an evaluation by a hand specialist or primary care physician sooner rather than later. The recommendations below are intended for patients with mild to moderate CTS symptoms, or in people who want to prevent the symptoms from occurring in the first place. There are some things we cant change about our health, such as our family history, age and anatomy, but there are many things which we can modify.Helpful things to do other than surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome:

Treatments which are NOT helpful for CTS:

Carpal Tunnel Hand Surgery

Carpal tunnel release is a surgery to treat carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common disorder caused by compression of the median nerve in the wrist. It can lead to pain, numbness, and sometimes disability of the hands. Carpal tunnel surgery involves relieving pressure on the median nerve by cutting part of the carpal ligament.

Treating Carpal Tunnel Without Surgery

For people suffering from carpal tunnel, it may seem like surgery is the only option available. However, there is a non-invasive option that has been shown to be effective. On today’s Health Minute, Dr. Douglas Hutchinson discusses how splinting can be used to treat the symptoms of carpal tunnel.

Basic Exercises For Carpal Tunnel Symptoms

Carpal tunnel is a painful nerve condition of the wrist, often brought on from overuse or repetitive motion of the forearm or hand. Keep in mind that exercises are only one way of modifying the behavior that caused the condition. Try them gently to make sure you dont do more harm than good, and always see a doctor if carpal tunnel symptoms worsen.

  • Warm Up. Hold your arms straight out in front of you. Flex your wrists so that your fingers point to the ceiling. Hold the position for five seconds, then release and let your fingers hang down, relaxed. Make a fist with both hands and squeeze hard, then flex your wrists down, hold for five seconds and relax. Lower your arms to your sides and shake your fingers gently. Repeat this exercise ten times.
  • Nerve-Gliding Finger Exercise. Start with hands extended, fingers straight and level with your wrist. Curl your fingers into a hook, then straighten. Curl your fingers into a fist, then straighten. Bend your fingers so they are perpendicular to your wrist. Repeat ten times.
  • Nerve-Gliding Thumb Exercise. Make a fist, then straighten your fingers and thumb. Flex your wrist back, and move your thumb as far from your palm as possible. Hold this position for five seconds. Flip your wrist so your palm faces up. Take hold of your thumb with your other hand and gently stretch it away from your palm. Hold for five seconds, then repeat five times.

    When To Get Surgery

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome And Massage Therapy

“The mistake that people often make is waiting too long to get surgery,” says Dr. Rozental. “I see a lot of people who say that their numbness was gradually worsening and now their hand is completely numb and has been for a year.” If the nerve is compressed long enough, the muscle atrophies and the nerve damage becomes permanent, she says.

So, if your carpal tunnel symptoms aren’t responding to other treatments, take action quickly.

The surgery takes 10 minutes under a local anesthetic. Unless you do a job that involves manual labor, you can typically go right back to normal activities, says Dr. Rozental.

“I tell my patients all the time that a carpal tunnel release done at the right time for the correct diagnosis is very successful,” she says.

The bodys healing process will rejoin the severed ends of the transverse carpal ligament and the resulting scar tissue should not press so hard on the underlying nerve. The surgeon may operate on one or both wrists at the same time.

The pain and numbness might improve immediately, or over time. Generally, you should rest your hand for a number of weeks after the operation.

Before undergoing the operation, your doctor will discuss some questions with you, such as:

    • Whether the operation will be performed under local or general anaesthetic
    • With general anaesthetic, whether you need to go into hospital the night before
    • Whether any of the medications, herbs, or vitamin and mineral supplements you usually take might interfere with surgical medications.

    Secret #1: Essential Oils

This is another highly contentious subject. While research says that there is no proof that essential oils have any healing power, thousands of testimonials say otherwise. You have nothing to lose by trying some of the essential oils listed here.

Some of the most commonly recommended essential oils for carpal tunnel include:

    • Wintergreen
    • Helichrysum

How To Find Permanent Relief From Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful condition caused by pressure on one of the nerves that provides sensation to your hand. Its estimated that some 5% of women and 3% of men suffer from this condition.

At its mildest, carpal tunnel syndrome causes numbness and tingling of the hand and wrist, and at its worst, the condition can be completely incapacitating. Even mild to moderate carpal tunnel syndrome can have a serious impact on day-to-day activities. The chronic pain can seriously diminish your quality of life, and if left untreated, advanced carpal tunnel syndrome can lead to muscle atrophy, loss of grip strength, reduced ability to use the affected hand and even permanent nerve damage.

Carpal tunnel syndrome isnt a condition that gets better on its own. This makes it doubly important to seek treatment when you notice symptoms. In this blog, the carpal tunnel specialists at Mirza Orthopedics in Smithtown, NY will explain the causes and symptoms of this painful condition and how you can find permanent relief from carpal tunnel syndrome.

What Happens After Carpal Tunnel Surgery

Your wrist will likely be in a heavy bandage or a splint for 1 to 2 weeks. Doctors usually schedule another appointment to remove the bandage or splint. During this time, you may be encouraged to move your fingers to help prevent stiffness.

You’ll probably have pain in your hand and wrist after surgery. It’s usually controlled with pain medicines taken by mouth. The surgeon may also have you keep the affected hand elevated while sleeping at night to help decrease swelling.

Once the splint is removed, you will likely begin a physical therapy program. The physical therapist will teach you motion exercises to improve the movement of your wrist and hand. These exercises will speed healing and strengthen the area. You may still need to sometimes use a splint or brace for a month or so after surgery.

The recovery period can take anywhere from a few days to a few months. In the meantime, you may need to adjust job duties or even take time off from work while you heal. Your doctor will talk to you about activity restrictions you should follow after surgery.

Let your doctor know about any of the following:

    • Fever
    • Redness, swelling, bleeding, or other drainage from the incision
    • Increased pain around the incision

These problems may need to be treated. Talk to your doctor about what you should expect and what problems mean you need to see your doctor right away.

Secret #: How To Get Rid Of Carpal Tunnel Pain At Night

Why does everything seem to hurt worse at night when you are trying to get your rest?! The answer to this is complicated, but most times, as in the case of carpal tunnel, its because we sleep in positions that cause pain. The pain from carpal tunnel can also increase at night because of a buildup of fluid, which put pressure on the area.

To find carpal tunnel relief at night, you need to avoid sleeping in certain positions that aggravate carpal tunnel such as

    • The fetal position, where your arms are in front of you, the outside of your hands-on top of each other, wrists bent in towards the chest.
    • Sleeping on your stomach with your hands under the pillow
    • Any position that bends your wrists

You can get more rest if you try the following before you hit the hay:

    • Sleep with a wrist brace
    • Sleep on your back with your arms and wrists flat on your side
    • Sleep on your side with a pillow between your arms so your wrists remain straight
    • Doing the stretching exercises listed in secret #7
    • Drinking a cup of chamomile tea before bed to relax the muscles

    Secret #1: Chiropractic Care

Can I get rid of carpal tunnel without surgery? Ask your chiropractor! Chances are, the answer is yes. The majority of people do not need surgery to correct their carpal tunnel syndrome.

The median nerve which gets compressed in the wrist and causes pain begins in the cervical spine. Your chiropractor is a highly trained specialist in the entire musculoskeletal system of the body. This means that he can investigate and treat the compression of nerves anywhere in the body.

Chiropractors treat pain at the source, not simply cover up your symptoms.

Receiving chiropractic adjustments to realign the wrist, fingers, elbows, shoulders, neck and back, reduce restrictions and allow the free flow of blood circulation. This will relieve pain, reduce swelling, and lead to lower levels of inflammation.

Some studies have suggested that many people with carpal tunnel pain are actually experiencing an issue not so much at the wrist, but a pinched median nerve in the upper back, shoulder, or neck. Chiropractic adjustments can reduce the pressure on pinched nerves.

Adjustments have been proven to help stop and even reverse carpal tunnel syndrome. Regular chiropractic care has very positive results in both controlling and healing carpal tunnel.

Your chiropractor might also use other modalities to treat your carpal tunnel including:

Working with your chiropractor is the best of all possible treatments as it stops pain while preventing the need for surgery.

How Do You Know If Your Carpal Tunnel Is Severe

When you have developed carpal tunnel syndrome, youll have some discomfort from time to time that you learn to live with but can go on about your day. Some days, your hands are weaker than others. You may drop things more frequently. As it becomes more severe, though, you may need to have a doctor examine you and see if any damage has happened, that may indicate you need Carpal tunnel treatment.

Over time, the muscles could shrink in your hand, theyll begin cramping more, and the pain will become worse. The function of the median nerve starts to slow down from the irritation and pressure around it. Carpal tunnel syndrome gets to a point for some people, they lose function of their hand, the nerve impulses slow down, they lose coordination, feeling, and strength in their fingers, hand, and especially the thumb. At this point, Carpal tunnel treatment may not be an option anymore if you want to be able to dress, feed, and do other bodily functions yourself.

The Dangers Of Apple Cider Vinegar

If a little bit is good for you, more should be better, right?

This is a common but dangerous assumption about many health products and it should never be applied to apple cider vinegar. Since ACV is so acidic, there are potential serious side effects if you drink apple cider vinegar to excess.

In one case study, a young woman was admitted to hospital with low blood potassium levels and osteoporosis. She had been consuming about a cup of ACV per day for 6 years. The doctors concluded that the excess acid caused minerals to leach from her bones .

In another case study, a teenager caused erosion of her tooth enamel by consuming large quantities of apple cider vinegar .

If you experience acid reflux or heartburn after consuming ACV, you should stop using it. While some people have low stomach acid, others have too much. The symptoms for both conditions are very similar. If consuming ACV makes your digestive symptoms worse, its possible that you have excess stomach acid.

Does It Matter What Type Of Apple Cider Vinegar

When used as a health tonic, organic apple cider vinegar is best – it has all the good stuff in it! Also, avoid vinegar in plastic bottles as it may contain chemical contaminants that leached out of the plastic.

We can, however, make some inferences here.

There are two possible links between ACV and gut health. One is acetic acid, a mild acid which is found in all vinegars. The other is the probiotic bacteria which is found in some brands of apple cider vinegar.
