How To Treat Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Without Surgery

How to Fix Carpal Tunnel in Both Hands Naturally

Im writing this article for people who want to avoid carpal tunnel surgery. Yes, I am a hand surgeon but Im also a physician, and part of our jobs as physicians is to educate patients about prevention of disease. Hopefully I can teach people about ways to reduce the risk of carpal tunnel syndrome and provide options for treatment prior to requiring surgery. As a disclaimer, patients who have severe carpal tunnel syndrome should be evaluated promptly and not delay treatment unnecessarily. Constant numbness in the hand and loss of muscle mass at the base of the thumb are signs of nerve damage and severe CTS. Surgery is the best way to prevent the nerve from being damaged irreversibly. If people wait too long before having surgery, some of the hand numbness can be permanent. Also, not all hand pain, numbness, and tingling are caused by CTS. If your symptoms are progressive, severe, or not responding to treatment, get an evaluation by a hand specialist or primary care physician sooner rather than later. The recommendations below are intended for patients with mild to moderate CTS symptoms, or in people who want to prevent the symptoms from occurring in the first place. There are some things we cant change about our health, such as our family history, age and anatomy, but there are many things which we can modify.Helpful things to do other than surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome:

Treatments which are NOT helpful for CTS:

Carpal Tunnel Hand Surgery

Carpal tunnel release is a surgery to treat carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common disorder caused by compression of the median nerve in the wrist. It can lead to pain, numbness, and sometimes disability of the hands. Carpal tunnel surgery involves relieving pressure on the median nerve by cutting part of the carpal ligament.

Treating Carpal Tunnel Without Surgery

For people suffering from carpal tunnel, it may seem like surgery is the only option available. However, there is a non-invasive option that has been shown to be effective. On today’s Health Minute, Dr. Douglas Hutchinson discusses how splinting can be used to treat the symptoms of carpal tunnel.

Basic Exercises For Carpal Tunnel Symptoms

Carpal tunnel is a painful nerve condition of the wrist, often brought on from overuse or repetitive motion of the forearm or hand. Keep in mind that exercises are only one way of modifying the behavior that caused the condition. Try them gently to make sure you dont do more harm than good, and always see a doctor if carpal tunnel symptoms worsen.

  • Warm Up. Hold your arms straight out in front of you. Flex your wrists so that your fingers point to the ceiling. Hold the position for five seconds, then release and let your fingers hang down, relaxed. Make a fist with both hands and squeeze hard, then flex your wrists down, hold for five seconds and relax. Lower your arms to your sides and shake your fingers gently. Repeat this exercise ten times.
  • Nerve-Gliding Finger Exercise. Start with hands extended, fingers straight and level with your wrist. Curl your fingers into a hook, then straighten. Curl your fingers into a fist, then straighten. Bend your fingers so they are perpendicular to your wrist. Repeat ten times.
  • Nerve-Gliding Thumb Exercise. Make a fist, then straighten your fingers and thumb. Flex your wrist back, and move your thumb as far from your palm as possible. Hold this position for five seconds. Flip your wrist so your palm faces up. Take hold of your thumb with your other hand and gently stretch it away from your palm. Hold for five seconds, then repeat five times.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome And Massage Therapy

“The mistake that people often make is waiting too long to get surgery,” says Dr. Rozental. “I see a lot of people who say that their numbness was gradually worsening and now their hand is completely numb and has been for a year.” If the nerve is compressed long enough, the muscle atrophies and the nerve damage becomes permanent, she says.

So, if your carpal tunnel symptoms aren’t responding to other treatments, take action quickly.

The surgery takes 10 minutes under a local anesthetic. Unless you do a job that involves manual labor, you can typically go right back to normal activities, says Dr. Rozental.

“I tell my patients all the time that a carpal tunnel release done at the right time for the correct diagnosis is very successful,” she says.

The bodys healing process will rejoin the severed ends of the transverse carpal ligament and the resulting scar tissue should not press so hard on the underlying nerve. The surgeon may operate on one or both wrists at the same time.

The pain and numbness might improve immediately, or over time. Generally, you should rest your hand for a number of weeks after the operation.

Before undergoing the operation, your doctor will discuss some questions with you, such as:

    • Whether the operation will be performed under local or general anaesthetic
    • With general anaesthetic, whether you need to go into hospital the night before
    • Whether any of the medications, herbs, or vitamin and mineral supplements you usually take might interfere with surgical medications.

    Secret #1: Essential Oils

This is another highly contentious subject. While research says that there is no proof that essential oils have any healing power, thousands of testimonials say otherwise. You have nothing to lose by trying some of the essential oils listed here.

Some of the most commonly recommended essential oils for carpal tunnel include:

    • Wintergreen
    • Helichrysum

Mixing one or more of the above oils and gently heating them creates a sweet-smelling massage oil. Use several times each day for best results.

How To Find Permanent Relief From Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful condition caused by pressure on one of the nerves that provides sensation to your hand. Its estimated that some 5% of women and 3% of men suffer from this condition.

At its mildest, carpal tunnel syndrome causes numbness and tingling of the hand and wrist, and at its worst, the condition can be completely incapacitating. Even mild to moderate carpal tunnel syndrome can have a serious impact on day-to-day activities. The chronic pain can seriously diminish your quality of life, and if left untreated, advanced carpal tunnel syndrome can lead to muscle atrophy, loss of grip strength, reduced ability to use the affected hand and even permanent nerve damage.

Carpal tunnel syndrome isnt a condition that gets better on its own. This makes it doubly important to seek treatment when you notice symptoms. In this blog, the carpal tunnel specialists at Mirza Orthopedics in Smithtown, NY will explain the causes and symptoms of this painful condition and how you can find permanent relief from carpal tunnel syndrome.

What Happens After Carpal Tunnel Surgery

Your wrist will likely be in a heavy bandage or a splint for 1 to 2 weeks. Doctors usually schedule another appointment to remove the bandage or splint. During this time, you may be encouraged to move your fingers to help prevent stiffness.

You’ll probably have pain in your hand and wrist after surgery. It’s usually controlled with pain medicines taken by mouth. The surgeon may also have you keep the affected hand elevated while sleeping at night to help decrease swelling.

Once the splint is removed, you will likely begin a physical therapy program. The physical therapist will teach you motion exercises to improve the movement of your wrist and hand. These exercises will speed healing and strengthen the area. You may still need to sometimes use a splint or brace for a month or so after surgery.

The recovery period can take anywhere from a few days to a few months. In the meantime, you may need to adjust job duties or even take time off from work while you heal. Your doctor will talk to you about activity restrictions you should follow after surgery.

Let your doctor know about any of the following:

    • Fever
    • Redness, swelling, bleeding, or other drainage from the incision
    • Increased pain around the incision

These problems may need to be treated. Talk to your doctor about what you should expect and what problems mean you need to see your doctor right away.

Secret #: How To Get Rid Of Carpal Tunnel Pain At Night

Why does everything seem to hurt worse at night when you are trying to get your rest?! The answer to this is complicated, but most times, as in the case of carpal tunnel, its because we sleep in positions that cause pain. The pain from carpal tunnel can also increase at night because of a buildup of fluid, which put pressure on the area.

To find carpal tunnel relief at night, you need to avoid sleeping in certain positions that aggravate carpal tunnel such as

    • The fetal position, where your arms are in front of you, the outside of your hands-on top of each other, wrists bent in towards the chest.
    • Sleeping on your stomach with your hands under the pillow
    • Any position that bends your wrists

You can get more rest if you try the following before you hit the hay:

    • Sleep with a wrist brace
    • Sleep on your back with your arms and wrists flat on your side
    • Sleep on your side with a pillow between your arms so your wrists remain straight
    • Doing the stretching exercises listed in secret #7
    • Drinking a cup of chamomile tea before bed to relax the muscles
    • Massage your hands, wrists, and arms before bed
    • Soak your hands and wrists in warm water for 10-15 minutes before bed to relax the muscles

Changing the position in which you sleep will probably do more good than anything else, but the other measures mentioned here have also been known to help. Experiment and try several options to find which ones work best for you.

    Secret #1: Chiropractic Care

Can I get rid of carpal tunnel without surgery? Ask your chiropractor! Chances are, the answer is yes. The majority of people do not need surgery to correct their carpal tunnel syndrome.

The median nerve which gets compressed in the wrist and causes pain begins in the cervical spine. Your chiropractor is a highly trained specialist in the entire musculoskeletal system of the body. This means that he can investigate and treat the compression of nerves anywhere in the body.

Chiropractors treat pain at the source, not simply cover up your symptoms.

Receiving chiropractic adjustments to realign the wrist, fingers, elbows, shoulders, neck and back, reduce restrictions and allow the free flow of blood circulation. This will relieve pain, reduce swelling, and lead to lower levels of inflammation.

Some studies have suggested that many people with carpal tunnel pain are actually experiencing an issue not so much at the wrist, but a pinched median nerve in the upper back, shoulder, or neck. Chiropractic adjustments can reduce the pressure on pinched nerves.

Adjustments have been proven to help stop and even reverse carpal tunnel syndrome. Regular chiropractic care has very positive results in both controlling and healing carpal tunnel.

Your chiropractor might also use other modalities to treat your carpal tunnel including:

Working with your chiropractor is the best of all possible treatments as it stops pain while preventing the need for surgery.

How Do You Know If Your Carpal Tunnel Is Severe

When you have developed carpal tunnel syndrome, youll have some discomfort from time to time that you learn to live with but can go on about your day. Some days, your hands are weaker than others. You may drop things more frequently. As it becomes more severe, though, you may need to have a doctor examine you and see if any damage has happened, that may indicate you need Carpal tunnel treatment.

Over time, the muscles could shrink in your hand, theyll begin cramping more, and the pain will become worse. The function of the median nerve starts to slow down from the irritation and pressure around it. Carpal tunnel syndrome gets to a point for some people, they lose function of their hand, the nerve impulses slow down, they lose coordination, feeling, and strength in their fingers, hand, and especially the thumb. At this point, Carpal tunnel treatment may not be an option anymore if you want to be able to dress, feed, and do other bodily functions yourself.
