TUESDAY, Oct. 20, 2015 — Naproxen — a drug available over-the-counter and by prescription — appears to provide as much relief for low back pain as a narcotic painkiller or a muscle relaxant, a new study suggests.
The study compared the use of prescription-strength naproxen alone to the use of naproxen with the narcotic painkiller oxycodone with acetaminophen , or the muscle relaxant cyclobenzaprine . Patients who took a combination of drugs fared no better than when they took naproxen alone, the researchers said.
“Acute low back pain is a frustrating condition,” said lead researcher Dr. Benjamin Friedman, an associate professor of emergency medicine at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City.
Many patients have already taken over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs , such as naproxen or ibuprofen , before they arrive in the emergency room, he said. Some people may have taken insufficient doses at incorrect intervals and could be advised to optimize their NSAID regimen, he said.
“But for those patients who have already optimized their NSAID regimen, there are no additional medical therapies available,” Friedman said.
“We don’t have good medical treatment for acute low back pain,” he added.
The report was published Oct. 20 in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
“Most back pain gets better on its own without anything,” Danesh said.
Flexeril For Back Pain Facts
Cyclobenzaprine is mostly indicated for back pain syndromes, although can be used for other musculoskeletal pain conditions, such as fibromyalgia. The drug calms the central nervous system and relaxes tight spasming muscles. The overall effect of the drug is one of relaxation and muscle laxity.
Recreational use of this drug at exponentially higher doses is somewhat common due to the popular nature and easy availability of Flexeril. Effects of recreational use are overall relaxation and sedation. It is often used as a sleep aid or to increase the effects of downers.

I took this drug on several occasions during my battle with chronic back pain. I never liked to take any medicine, but in the worst of times, I occasionally gave in to the doctors and tried to do things their way. I did not experience any relief from Flexeril, but I certainly do remember the horrible dry mouth experience very well. I also remember feeling out of it and uncomfortably lazy when taking this drug. Although I only tried it on a couple of occasions, I got the feeling I was much better off without it. No surprise here, since this was my experience with all pharmaceutical forms of treatment.

Narrative: The muscle relaxant cyclobenzaprine is a common medication for low back pain that is used to reduce muscle spasm as an adjunct to pain control with nonnarcotic analgesics. Multiple reviews exist on this topic, including three we consider to be of relatively good quality, although with differing emphases. One is a Cochrane review that pools nonbenzodiazepine drugs together for analysis1; a second conducted for a joint clinical guideline from the American Pain Society and the American College of Physicians2; and the third is a comprehensive examination of cyclobenzaprine performed by an independent author group.3 This latter review, published in 2001, examined 14 publications comparing cyclobenzaprine with placebo, and was used as the basis for the joint clinical guideline; thus, we have concentrated on this study as our primary source for this summary.
In pooled analyses, treatment with cyclobenzaprine was more likely than placebo to result in global improvement in symptoms by day 10 of treatment with a number needed to treat of 3 . Adverse effects, typically drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, and nausea, occurred in 53% of participants in the cyclobenzaprine group compared with 28% in the placebo group for a number needed to harm of 4.

A key question to ask a pain patient is whether they have problems falling or staying asleep. For those with difficulty falling asleep, use of a benzodiazepine or sedative hypnotic sleep aid is appropriate. For those with early morning awakening, additional questions should address possible depression associated with pain that might merit use of an antidepressant medication. For those with neuropathic pain,12 many physicians now favor amitryptiline or nortryptoline with the latter having less side effects for many.
The newer antidepressant duloxetine 14 would appear to be the agent of choice in a diabetic with neurogenic pain. I decided to do this cold turkey which was a complete disaster and a big mistake which is why I feel strongly like I shouldve tapered myself off of it. Later on, I read that thats what you have to do. Please consult your doctor never try to stop this medication without consulting your doctor first.
;;;;;; In my experience, I got heart palpitations shortness of breath, headaches and just felt very sick and not realizing it had anything to do with stopping muscle relaxers so abruptly. So again please read about any drugs that you start or stop using dont go through what I went through it wouldve been better to just taper off of it slowly instead of going cold turkey. Very dangerous!
