Wrist pain can be caused by injuries, sudden impact, overuse, repetitive stress, and disease. Some of the most common causes of wrist pain include fractures, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, ganglion cysts. Musicians, hairstylists, tennis players, and gymnasts are at an especially high risk of wrist pain due to the repetitive wrist movements required in these jobs. Some patients might experience wrist pain as a dull ache, and others could have sharper pain or a pins-and-needles sensation. Pregnant women, diabetes patients, those with gout, and obese individuals are especially likely to have pain in their wrists. Wrist pain can be evaluated by a primary care doctor, and patients may be referred to an orthopedist for specialist advice. To evaluate wrist pain, the doctor will begin by palpating the patientâs wrist to check for tenderness and swelling, and they will also look for signs of any deformities in the wrist. The patient may be asked to move their wrist in various directions, and grip strength and sensation will be assessed. What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a fairly common condition that affects the hand and wrist, says hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder surgeon William Seitz, MD.

Symptoms include numbness, tingling and pain, usually in your thumb and the first three fingers of your hand, Dr. Seitz says.

Carpal tunnel syndrome happens when the median nerve, which runs from your forearm to your hand through a narrow space called the carpal tunnel, is compressed or pinched, Dr. Seitz says.

Nine tendons that flex the first three fingers and thumb also run through the carpal tunnel.

Anything that makes the carpal tunnel smaller and pinches the median nerve can result in carpal tunnel syndrome, Dr. Seitz says. These can include:

  • Medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes
  • Repetitive hand movements, especially if the wrist is bent so that your hands are lower than your wrists

Top 5 Stretches To Relieve Wrist/Hand Pain

  • Praying Position Stretches:

    No significant evidence supports the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to treat CTS.

    If CTS relates to an underlying condition, such as diabetes, arthritis, or hypothyroidism, try to control the condition and symptoms should reduce.

    For people who develop CTS during pregnancy, symptoms usually resolve 6 to 12 weeks after giving birth. Some specialists recommend putting a splint on the wrist while sleeping.

    Sometimes, if severe compression is occurring on the median nerve, it may be causing nerve damage or muscle wasting that requires further treatment.

    The treating doctor may recommend surgery if CTS is severe and if non-surgical treatments do not help. Surgical treatment of CTS does appear to have the best outcome. Studies have shown that 6 to 12 months after surgery, CTS improves more than it would with just a splint or some other non-surgical treatment.
