Using Cold And Heat To Alleviate Sciatica Pain
When you first start experiencing sciatica pain, applying a cold pack can provide a lot of relief. Wrap a cold pack or a bag of frozen peas in a clean towel, and apply it to the painful area a few times a day for up to 20 minutes each time.
If your sciatica is still bothering you after a few days, then it can be helpful to try heat instead. Apply a heat lamp on the lowest setting, a hot pack, or a heating pad to the painful area.
If your pain persists, try alternating between cold packs and hot packs.
The Best Stretches And Exercises For Sciatica
As handy as it would be for certain stretches and sciatica exercises to relieving sciatica across the board, the reality is that everyone experiences sciatica differently, and that what helps one person might actually hurt another.
Listen to your body, and dont try to push through anything that doesnt feel right for you, Jones says. Exercising through pain will result in worsening symptoms. Itll also likely throw off your form, which will raise your risk of exercise-related injury.
Rather than pushing through, its important to figure out what motions improve your pain and do more of that, and what motions worsen your pain, so you can temporarily avoid those, he says.
Over time, after your symptoms subside from doing sciatica exercises, you may be able to gradually add back in those previously irksome movements without pain.
To aid your quest for sciatic nerve pain relief, we asked Jones for his favorite stretches and exercises that most commonly ease sciatica. All or some may work for you. Try them out, performing any winners at least twice per week and as often as every day.
As always, safety is key with sciatica exercises. If you have a chronic condition, an injury, or balance issues, talk to your doctor about how you can exercise safely as we do not provide medical advice.

How To Treat Sciatica In The Leg
When our sciatic nerve, which begins in the lower back and goes down the back of our legs, is pressed or injured, a number of troublesome symptoms characterized by pain and numbness in the affected leg are presented. This condition can affect our daily tasks, so it is important to act quickly to promote relief and get the pressure to diminish. So on OneHowTo.com we give some alternatives for you to discover how to treat sciatica in the leg and recover effectively.
Sciatica alone is not considered a disease but a symptom of another condition that is important to address. A key step to treat sciatica in the leg is referral to a specialist to identify what is causing the discomfort.
The common causes of sciatica are:
- Presence of disc herniation.
- Narrowing of the spine or spinal stenosis, a condition that commonly occurs with aging.
- Pelvic fractures or injuries.
- Piriformis syndrome
In many cases sciatica is relieved by itself, but it is usually necessary to implement some treatments. Depending on the condition that causes discomfort in the sciatic nerve it may be necessary to correct the problem with surgery, something that only a doctor can determine.
The application of hot and cold compresses is one of the best ways to treat sciatica in the leg and reduce discomfort. We recommend starting with cold compresses or ice packs for the first 48 hours when the pain presents, these should be applied for 20 minutes three to four times a day.
Are Restless Leg Syndrome Multiple Sclerosis Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Plantar Fasciitis Shingles Or Bursitis Related To Sciatica

While all these conditions affect either the spinal cord, nerves, muscles, ligaments or joints and all can cause pain, none are directly related to sciatica. The main causes of these conditions are different. Sciatica only involves the sciatic nerve. That being said, the most similar condition would be carpal tunnel syndrome, which also involves a compression of a nerve.
A final word about sciatica. . . .
Most cases of sciatica do not require surgery. Time and self-care treatment are usually all thats needed. However, if simple self-care treatments do not relieve your pain, see your healthcare provider. Your healthcare provider can confirm the cause of your pain, suggest other treatment options and/or refer you to other spine health specialists if needed.

Pigeon pose in a chair This pose specifically targets the piriformis muscle. Try to find a chair in which you can sit comfortably with both feet flat on the floor and your thighs roughly parallel to the floor. Place your right ankle near your left knee and try to relax your right knee toward the floor. Repeat on the left side.
Why Is This Happening
As we mentioned earlier, sciatica is a symptom and not an actual health condition. Sciatica simply means that the sciatic nerve is being compressed or irritated in some way, resulting in pain. The root cause of sciatic pain needs to be diagnosed by a professional, such as a chiropractor. Some of the more common causes of sciatic pain include:
- Lumbar disc herniation
- Isthmic spondylolisthesis
- Spinal tumor
There are other possible causes, but those are rare. Before your sciatic pain can be relieved, the root cause needs to be determined and addressed.

Pain Relievers And Muscle Relaxants
Taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, either OTC or Rx, can ease the distress. Because painful muscle spasms may also accompany a disk herniation, doctors sometimes prescribe muscle relaxants or pain-reducing tricyclic antidepressants. A caveat: “These won’t help with the pain caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve,” says A. Nick Shamie, MD, a spokesperson for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
How To Prevent Future Sciatic Nerve Pain
Despite the many conditions or illnesses that can lead to sciatica, this specific type of pain always originates from pressure placed on the nerve and relieving that pressure is the best way to ensure that sciatic nerve pain doesnt return in the future. Unfortunately, you can only properly address some conditions involving damaged discs or a narrowing spinal column with surgery. But many other back issues respond well to the home remedies and exercises mentioned above. In general, you will experience less sciatic nerve pain if you lose excess weight, stop smoking, improve your core and back strength, and increase your hip and hamstring flexibility. With those goals in mind, consider beginning training at a local gym or buying a membership at your local pilates or yoga studio.

What Are The Benefits Of Massage For Sciatica
Massage therapy is an effective way to relieve pain. A 2014 study even found that deep tissue massage may be as effective as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for relieving low back pain, which can be a symptom of sciatica.
When it comes to sciatica, massage can help in two ways. Massages main benefit is soothing tense muscles. When your muscles are tense, they can put more pressure on your nerves, including your sciatic nerve. Massaging these tense muscles may help to reduce pressure on your sciatic nerve.
Soft tissue massage may also help to increase your pain threshold by stimulating the release of endorphins. Endorphins boost pleasure and relieve pain, causing an increased feeling of well-being. They are also released during sex, exercise, and eating.
