Do Muscle Relaxers Help With Sciatica Pain
In Challenges, Medications by SandyMay 20, 2019
This is my long journey and experience having severe and the most awful sciatica for 2 years which I am currently still dealing with in a lesser way because I do feel Im on the road to recovery for sure, finally. I have seen positive results with different medications and therapies that I will include in this blog. The reason I have been wanting to put this information out there is because of my struggle to find any real solutions or recovery experiences. So heres mine. Following are some questions I asked myself and you too might have wondered, in regards to muscle relaxers.
What Is Sciatic Nerve Pain
Sciatica develops when certain nerves become pinched in the lower spine, running along the sciatic nerve. Intense pain is felt, as a result, which runs the entire length of the legs. The symptoms of sciatica are as follows:
Extreme pain during sitting Difficulty standing or walking Usually only one affected leg Tingling, burning, or searing sensation in the affected leg Pain also affects the foot and toes Pain causes weakness and disability for moving the affected leg, foot or toes
Sciatic nerve pain is usually caused by a slipped or herniated disc, spinal injury, spinal stenosis, isthmic spondylolisthesis, or piriformis syndrome. It can also occur during pregnancy, due to a re-arranging of organs and pressure on the spine.
And you dont need to turn to surgery or drugs to solve the problem. One study found that over 60% of patients who did not receive relief from sciatica after surgery, DID receive relief from spinal manipulation just as well as if they had undergone surgical intervention.
Using Cold And Heat To Alleviate Sciatica Pain
When you first start experiencing sciatica pain, applying a cold pack can provide a lot of relief. Wrap a cold pack or a bag of frozen peas in a clean towel, and apply it to the painful area a few times a day for up to 20 minutes each time.
If your sciatica is still bothering you after a few days, then it can be helpful to try heat instead. Apply a heat lamp on the lowest setting, a hot pack, or a heating pad to the painful area.
If your pain persists, try alternating between cold packs and hot packs.

Pain Relief And Treatment
The primary goal of initial treatment is the relief of pain. Treatment and relief options for sciatica include:
Moderate activityBed rest had traditionally been recommended in the treatment of sciatica but this is no longer the case. Research has indicated that bed rest does not tend to speed recovery and may in fact hinder it. It is now recommended that heavy physical activity should be avoided, but moderate activity should be maintained. It is thought that maintaining activity assists with overall recovery by helping to reduce inflammation.MedicationsPain relieving medications such as paracetamol and ipuprofen are commonly used to treat sciatic pain. In cases where muscle spasms are thought to be the cause, muscle relaxant medications may be recommended. When pain is severe the use of opioids may be necessary. Other medications that may be used are low-dose anti-depressants to reduce nerve stimulation, and cortisone injections near the spine to reduce pain and inflammation.
Things To Look For When Choosing A Cream For Sciatica Pain

Now that we highlighted some of the important points of how sciatica works, and how the pain spreads, lets take a look at measurements to take when shopping for a cream that can treat sciatica pain.
- Lab Results All pharmaceutical products undergo strict regulative processes that ensure that the product is safe to use. In the product label, as well as product description, you can find all the necessary information from research, including lab results and statistics.
- Price Given that sciatica is a result of a neurological problem in the back, the price may fluctuate for different treatment options. If youre restricted on budget, explore more budget-friendly options, but make sure that they are backed with proper research and testing and works In the end, if the cream or gel works properly and its confirmed based on reliable user-review, breaking the bank may be well worth it.
- Ingredients All products should be thoroughly checked for materials they contain, especially the CBD products. If the product label lists a material youre potentially allergic to, you need to avoid buying that product and look for alternatives.
- What it Does People report to have different symptoms of sciatica. With that in mind, you need to see what problem the cream you want to buy solves. Sciatica can cause several discomforts including tingling, burning, tickling, itching, and more. Make sure that the topical medication you pick does exactly that.

Sciatica often feels like a throbbing and radiating pain that grows and travels down your spine in line with the sciatic nerve. It can cause radiating pain in the spine, buttocks, hips, and legs.
The affected sciatic nerve becomes sensitive and even moderate movement can feel painful if your disk or bone spur touches the nerve.
There are also other reasons to why you got sciatica. One of them could be piriformis syndrome which occurs when the piriformis muscle gets spasmed causing irritations in the sciatic nerve. Another reason could be pregnancy as the uterus is expanding.
There are different treatment options for sciatica. Your doctor may prescribe physical therapy, acupuncture, using a lumbar pillow, massage, yoga stretches, and even surgery. Some other treatment options also include using tens of machines, as well as creams.
We reviewed really effective creams, but before starting to use them, its the best you consult with your doctor.

Tips To Use Topical Medication To Relieve Sciatica Pain
Sciatica pain originates in your lower spine and travels down your sciatic nerve into your thigh and leg.
- When you use topical medication, apply the cream/gel or lidocaine patch to your rear pelviswhere your sciatic nerve roots are located.
- Treating this area, rather than your thigh or calf where the pain may be more, will help control and numb the pain at its origin and also calm the nearby nerves.
When you experience pain relief after using topical medication, try to perform simple lower back stretches. Stretches and targeted exercises can help prevent sciatica from recurring, by relieving the sciatic nerve compression, strengthening your tissues, and improving the flexibility in your lower back.
Get Chiropractic Spinal Adjustments
This can be an expensive solution if you arent covered, but it is one that can work nonetheless. Most chiropractors are very experienced and knowledgeable when it comes to sciatica nerve pain and should be able to terminate your pain quite easily. Whether this will last over a long period of time is another question those in milder stages of sciatica should notice the strongest benefits. Its important that you know exactly what kind of sciatica youre experience and to what degree youre experiencing it at as well. This is crucial information that a chiropractor will need to be aware of to best handle your situation.

When Is Surgery Considered
Spinal surgery is usually not recommended unless you have not improved with other treatment methods such as stretching and medication, your pain is worsening, you have severe weakness in the muscles in your lower extremities or you have lost bladder or bowel control.
How soon surgery would be considered depends on the cause of your sciatica. Surgery is typically considered within a year of ongoing symptoms. Pain that is severe and unrelenting and is preventing you from standing or working and youve been admitted to a hospital would require more aggressive treatment and a shorter timeline to surgery. Loss of bladder or bowel control could require emergency surgery if determined to be cauda equine syndrome.
The goal of spinal surgery for sciatic pain is to remove the pressure on the nerves that are being pinched and to make sure the spine is stable.
Surgical options to relieve sciatica include:
Microdiscectomy: This is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove fragments of a herniated disk that are pressing on a nerve.
- Laminectomy: In this procedure, the lamina that is causing pressure on the sciatic nerve is removed.
Topical Medications May Provide Immediate Localized Pain Relief
Several ointments, gels, and creams can help relieve nerve pain by altering the blood flow, reducing inflammation, and creating a numbing effect. Common topical medications that may help relieve sciatica include preparations of4:
- Methyl salicylate
- Camphor
- Cannabidiol
Since topical medications act locally, they may provide immediate pain relief. Some preparations may cause skin irritation, so trying out a small amount initially is recommended.

Poor posture and compromised muscles can impact the alignment of your spine, increasing your risk for lower back pain and sciatica. Gentle strengthening exercises that target your core and back will improve your posture and ability to respond to stress, reducing the likelihood and severity of back pain. While youre recovering from sciatica, you may want to avoid high-impact exercises, such as running and plyometrics.
