Shoulder Pain As A Symptom

Shoulder Blade Pain?! One Easy Fix! | Dr K & Dr Wil

Unfortunately, shoulder pain related to lung cancer or mesothelioma can be very similar or identical to that of conditions such as arthritis. If you have any question at all about shoulder pain, it’s better to be safe and talk to your doctor. Yet, there are a few symptoms that make lung cancer more likely.

Symptoms that may be more concerning for lung cancer include shoulder pain that’s worse at night, pain that occurs at rest, and pain that’s not associated with any loss of motion with activity.

Shoulder pain is also more likely to be something non-skeletal if you do not recall any injury or activities in which you may have overused your shoulder.

Shoulder pain is also more likely to be a symptom;of lung cancer if you have other symptoms of lung cancer, such as shortness of breath a persistent cough, wheezing, hoarseness, coughing up blood, fatigue, or if you are losing weight for no reason.

Keep in mind that the symptoms of lung cancer in women and symptoms of lung cancer in non-smokers are often less typical than those in menand sometimes very vague, such as the gradual onset shortness of breath with activity and fatigue.

Many people dismiss the early symptoms of lung cancer as being due to age-related changes in exercise tolerance, weight gain, or being too sedentary.

Why Do My Shoulders Hurt When I Sneeze Or Cough

Two potential reasons your shoulders hurt upon sneezing and coughing are:

  • Pleurisy: This is a condition where your lungs and chest become inflamed, causing a sharp pain when you cough, sneeze and breathe. It typically only causes chest pain, but the pain can travel to between your shoulders as well.
  • A spinal disc irritation or injury: When your spinal discs are injured, your nerves are compressed, causing irritation and spasms. Sneezing and coughing puts pressure on your nerves and discs usually, so when theyre irritated, this causes pain in your shoulders and arms.

Treating Shoulder Blade Pain

Shoulder Blade Pain: Potential Causes, Treatment, Prevention

S To Fix A Knot Under Your Shoulder Blade

Have you ever had a knot under your shoulder blade? One that hindered your movements? You are not alone. Most painful knots under the shoulder blade are due to tension buildup within the soft tissues. In this blog, I address how to break up and mobilize this tissue. Ill also offer suggestions to prevent future incidents of pain.

Step 1: Release Trigger Points

Trigger points are those hard, unyielding knots in your muscles that are sensitive to touch. These stuck and tight tissues need to be broken up. You can do this yourself with a foam roller, massage ball or even a tennis ball. To demonstrate, look at the picture of me leaning against the wall. As you can see, I have the ball directly behind my shoulder blade on the sensitive spot. Depending on how tender the area is, you may want to start by standing with your back to the wall. Lying on the ball on the ground may be too intense, which could cause the muscles to actually tighten up more because of too much direct pressure. Thus, a slow, gentle approach is best.

Once you have the ball positioned on the knot, there are three techniques you can use:

  • Now, holding the ball on the knot, slowly move your armup, sideways, down and back, and any direction that creates a gentle pull on the tissues in and near the knot. As a result, the tight tissues will open and expand.
  • Step 2: Move Your Shoulder Blades

    Shoulder Shrugs

    This exercise moves the shoulder blades up and down along the spine.

    Pain From The Shoulder To The Hand

    Many causes of right shoulder and arm pain are localized in the area of the shoulder and upper arm. But some can cause pain that can be felt all the way down to your hand. These include:

    • Cervical radiculopathy: This condition can cause sharp pain that can move from the area of your neck and shoulder all the way down your arm.
    • Thoracic outlet syndrome: Pain from TOS can be present from your shoulder down to your hand and fingers.
    • Brachial plexus injuries: As discussed earlier, this type of injury could affect your arm and hand.

    Nerve Compression Or Damage

    A seated, rounded posture can also lead to compression of the cervical spine , leading to pain between the shoulder blades, Louw says.

    Louw mentions that; another possible cause of shoulder blade pain is thoracic outlet syndrome. This group of conditions results from compression on the blood vessels and nerves in the lower neck and upper chest. It can cause pain and weakness in the shoulder and tingling or pain in the fingers. There’s debate about what exactly causes this syndrome, which can be misdiagnosed because the symptoms look similar to rotator cuff injuries or other conditions.

    Physical therapy can help treat the issue by guiding you in strengthening your chest and improving your posture.

    Another nerve-related issue that can lead to pain is scapular winging, a condition in which one or more of the shoulder blades sticks out rather than laying flat against the body. But Dr. Baxi notes that it’s not very common.

    Fact Checked

    When suffering from pain under your right shoulder blade, your doctor may make the determination that you are having a gallstone attack. When a gallstone lodges in a duct, this results in a blockage. The symptoms of a lodged gallstone include pain between your shoulder blades; pain in your right shoulder; intense pain in the upper right portion of your abdomen and equally intense pain right below your breast bone or sternum in the center of your abdomen, according to the Mayo Clinic 1.

    Pain Under The Shoulder Causes

    As Ive already mentioned, there is one particular muscle that can cause pain under your shoulder blade.

    It is called serratus posterior superior.

    It lies below your shoulder blade and helps your diaphragm when you inhale by raising your ribs and expanding your rib cage.

    If this muscle is overloaded, it can become tense and develop trigger points.

    Both can lead to the pain in question.

    Additional details at this point are not necessary since it would cause more confusion than elucidation.

    Simply carry on with the self-massage.

    Common Causes Of Radicular Pain In The Shoulder

    Several common neck problems can cause symptoms of cervical radiculopathy, including:

    • Cervical degenerative disc disease. The intervertebral discs between the vertebrae lose hydration over time. When a disc loses enough hydration it becomes thinner and less able to do its job, potentially producing pain and possibly irritating or pressuring on the nearby nerve root.
    • See Cervical Osteoarthritis

    • Cervical foraminal stenosis. This condition occurs when the nerve root becomes compressed while going through the foramena small hole in the bony vertebral construct. The narrowing of the foramen can happen in various ways, such by the overgrowth of bone spurs or by a herniated disc.

    Scapular Dyskinesis And Common Shoulder Pain Causes

    Shoulder Blade Pain: Potential Causes, Treatment, Prevention

    The scapula is designed to move in connection with your arm in order to keep the shoulders ball-and-socket joint in proper alignment. If an injury, stress or strain to the muscles or tendons in the shoulder causes weakness or imbalance, the position of the scapula can be affected. This, in turn, can cause limited mobility and shoulder blade pain.

    Scapular dyskinesis: the surgeons perspective, an article published in the NIHs US National Library of Medicine, concluded that there are high correlations between specific shoulder injuries and scapular dyskinesis:

    In addition to the acute injuries above, musculoskeletal issues weak, tight or detached muscles that control the scapula are the most common causes of shoulder blade pain.

    These musculoskeletal issues are often attributed to overuse, repetitive motions and poor overhead movement mechanics. Scapular dyskinesis can also be caused by injuries to the nerves that supply these muscles.

    Shoulder Blade Pain Diagnosis And Treatment Options

    If shoulder pain does not go away within a few days, you should see your doctor as it could be an indication of a more serious injury or ailment. Your doctor will perform MRI scans in order to see what is going on with your shoulder to determine if medical intervention is required or home remedies will suffice.

    Some treatment options for shoulder blade pain include stopping the pain-causing activity and resting, keeping proper posture, practicing scapular retraction exercises, applying cold and hot compresses, reducing stress, maintaining a healthy weight, practicing acupuncture, wearing a sling, getting massages, taking medications like painkillers or anti-inflammatory medications, getting treatment for underlying illnesses like heart or lung conditions, arthritis, and other infections, which could contribute to shoulder blade pain.

    Possible Causes Of Pains In The Shoulder Blade

    Pain in the shoulder blades can be associated with inflammation or injury to the shoulder area itself, or may instead be due to referred pain from other areas in the chest and abdominal area. Since of this, pain experienced in this area can be something as simple as a moderate muscle stress, or as serious as a heart or lung condition or cancer.

    Some conditions are more likely to cause referred pain to the shoulder blades on one side. For example, gallbladder disease might trigger referred pain in the right shoulder whereas heart disease are more likely to cause referred pain to the left shoulder blade.

    Injuries to other parts of your body, such as rotator cuff tears, spine fractures, or other injuries that cause trauma, can also result in pain between your shoulder blades.

    Lets have a look at the possible causes of shoulder blade pain broken down into different organ systems and regions of the body.

    Pain Between The Shoulder And Elbow

    In some cases, pain can be felt in both the area of the right shoulder and further down towards your right elbow. Some causes are:

    • Rotator cuff disease: Pain can begin to radiate from your shoulder into the side of your upper arm.
    • Torn rotator cuff: Shoulder pain may radiate down your arm to the area of the elbow.
    • Dislocated shoulder: The pain from a dislocated shoulder can radiate down the upper arm.
    • Upper arm fracture: A break in your upper arm can cause pain thats localized around the area of your shoulder and throughout your upper arm.
    • Frozen shoulder: Pain from a frozen shoulder may also spread into your right bicep.
    • Calcific tendinitis: Similarly to frozen shoulder, pain from calcific tendinitis can spread down into your bicep area.

    Calcific Tendonitis And Calcific Periarthritis

    Sometimes pain, swelling and difficulty moving your shoulder is caused by calcium crystals that form insidea tendon. Tendons are the strong cords that attach muscles to bones.;;

    We all need the mineral calcium in the body, as it helps make bones and teeth strong. But sometimes, if you have too much of it in the body, sharp, tiny, crystals can form in the wrong places.;;

    If they form in tendons, this is called calcific tendonitis.;;

    This can happen at various places around the body, including the shoulder.;;

    Calcium crystals can then shed from a tendon and cause pain and swelling around a joint. This is called calcific periarthritis.;;

    Steroid injections often work well to reduce swelling. Butsometimes the calcium deposits mayneed to be removed by keyhole surgery.;

    Possible Causes Behind The Pain

    The shoulder blade, or scapula, is usually irritated by sudden and vigorous movements during physical activity. The pain you may feel comes from the surrounding tissue. In most cases, this is a healthy pain; it often signifies that your shoulder blade muscles are getting stronger.

    People who mostly lead a sedentary lifestyle may also experience upper back pain between the shoulder blades from time to time. Many of them report the pain after lifting a heavy object or carrying luggage. Inactivity may weaken the muscles that support these triangular bones, which can make shoulder muscles and bones more prone to injury.

    When it comes to causes of scapula pain, medical experts recognize two groups.;

    Injury, muscle strain, or overuse of the rotator cuff in your shoulders represent the first group of causes. These factors affect your shoulder blades directly. Muscle strain, pain, or discomfort related to the overuse of the rotator cuff is usually benign and passes quickly.

    The second group of causes of pain in your shoulder blades includes diseases of the abdomen or chest. This pain differs from the healthy pain that comes from exercising or temporary muscle strain. If you feel pain that is dull, persistent, and poorly localized, you may want to schedule an appointment with a doctor.;;

    Treatments For Shoulder Blade Pain

    How shoulder blade pain is treated varies widely depending on the source of the pain.

    For instance, a simple muscle strain will likely only require non-prescription pain killers and perhaps heat or ice and compression and elevation of the problematic joint, along with resting your arms and back for a period of time.

    For most individuals dealing with minor injuries and uncomplicated shoulder blade pain that has no underlying issues, this simple treatment will be enough.

    However, for more complicated shoulder issues, relieving shoulder blade pain may require additional testing to rule out various diagnoses, some of which could be extremely serious.

    For instance, if your shoulder pain is the result of an underlying disorder, you may need more complex treatment like chemotherapy, ongoing medications, and even surgery.

    If you are experiencing any kind of shoulder blade pain, you should see an orthopaedic surgeon or doctor as soon as you can, particularly if the pain is new and not the result of a known muscle strain or injury.

    Seeking medical attention right away is important because shoulder blade pain especially unexplained shoulder blade pain can be a symptom of something much more serious.
