Thyroid nodules are very common, especially in the U.S. In fact, experts estimate that about half of Americans will have one by the time theyre 60 years old. Some are solid, and some are fluid-filled cysts. Others are mixed.
Because many thyroid nodules dont have symptoms, people may not even know theyre there. In other cases, the nodules can get big enough to cause problems. But even larger thyroid nodules are treatable, sometimes even without surgery.
What Are The Risk Factors For Thyroid Nodules
Risk factors for developing thyroid nodules include:
- Family history. Having parents or siblings who have had thyroid nodules or thyroid or other endocrine cancers increases your chance of developing nodules.
- Age: The chance of developing nodules increases as you get older.
- Gender: Women are more likely than men to develop thyroid nodules.
- Radiation exposure: A history of radiation exposure to the head and neck increases your risk of developing nodules.
Risk factors for developing cancerous thyroid nodules include:
- Family history of thyroid cancer
- A nodule that is hard or is stuck to a nearby structure
- Male gender
Symptoms Of Thyroid Nodules: The Complete List
- A lump in the front of the neck that you can feel.
- A lump in the neck that you can see when looking in the mirror. Usually somebody else notices it first.
- A sense or feeling like you need to swallow something.

How Is Thyroid Pain Treated
To treat thyroid pain, youll need to treat the thyroid condition. Thyroid cancers are usually very treatable and can usually be taken care of with surgery alone. In fact, this surgery is regularly done on an outpatient basis.

How Are Goiters And Thyroid Nodules Diagnosed

A fine-needle biopsy might be done to see whether a nodule is cancerous. During the biopsy, the doctor inserts a thin needle through the skin into the thyroid nodule . Through the needle, the doctor takes a sample of tissue or some fluid from a cyst. The tissue or fluid is then sent to a lab. In some cases, the nodule might have to be surgically removed for more a detailed examination.
Some thyroid nodules make too much hormone and so another test, a thyroid scan, might be done. For this test, a person swallows a pill containing a small amount of radioactive iodine or another radioactive substance. The thyroid absorbs the radioactive substance. Then a special camera measures where the radioactive substance is taken up by the thyroid gland. This gives the doctor a better picture of the location, size, and type of thyroid nodule.

What Is The Connection Between The Thyroid And Neck Pain
The thyroid is a gland in the front of a persons neck that develops hormones which regulate blood pressure, body temperature, heart rate, and the amount of time it takes for energy to be produced from food. A connection between the thyroid and neck pain is commonly caused by a few different thyroid conditions. Pain in a persons neck may be associated with Hashimotos disease, goiter, and cancer.
Hypothyroidism is a disorder that develops because of a lack of thyroid hormone. It is usually associated with symptoms like depression, weight gain, hair loss, fatigue, intolerance to cold, constipation, impaired memory, and blurred vision. Hashimoto thyroiditis, or Hashimotos disease, is an autoimmune condition that commonly causes hypothyroidism. The symptoms of this disease are often the same as hypothyroidism, but may be accompanied by an enlarged thyroid and neck pain.
Is It Menopause Or Thyroid Disorder
Thyroid disorders can cause symptoms that are mistaken for those of a woman approaching menopause. How Is Subacute Thyroiditis Treated
If youre diagnosed with subacute thyroiditis, your doctor will give you medications to help reduce the pain and control inflammation. In some cases, this is the only treatment required for subacute thyroiditis. Possible medications include:
- Over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs . Medications like aspirin and ibuprofen work by reducing inflammation. As a result, you will experience less pain. Acetaminophen is not as effective because it doesnt reduce the inflammation thyroiditis causes.
- Corticosteroids. Corticosteroids are used when NSAIDs arent enough to reduce swelling. Prednisone is a common corticosteroid used to treat subacute thyroiditis. Your doctor may prescribe 15 to 30 milligrams per day to start, and then slowly decrease the dosage over three to four weeks.
- Beta-blockers. Your doctor may prescribe beta-blockers if hyperthyroidism is present in the early stages. These medications lower blood pressure and pulse rate to relieve certain symptoms, including anxiety and an irregular heartbeat.
Treatment for hyperthyroidism is important at the beginning of the disease. However, it will not be helpful once your condition progresses into the second phase. During the later stages of the disease, youll develop hypothyroidism. Youll probably need to take hormones such as levothyroxine to replace the ones that your body isnt producing.

Hyperthyroid And Hypothyroid Neck Pain
Hyperthyroid disease is a condition that involves abnormal escalation of thyroid activity. In these cases, the thyroid gland produces too many hormones. There are many possible sources of hyperthyroidism, including Graves disease, thyroid nodule formation, thyroiditis and excessive intake of iodine in the diet. Non-painful symptoms of hyperthyroid conditions might encompass moodiness, nervousness, general fatigue, muscle weakness, insomnia, tremors in the hands, irregular heart-rate, loose stools, weight loss and sensitivity to heat.
Meanwhile, hypothyroidism involves a reduction in the hormone-producing activity of the gland. Typical causations include Hashimotos disease, thyroiditis, congenital disposition of the gland, injury to the thyroid and chemical reactions due to some pharmaceutical compounds. Your thyroid may be swollen and tender to the touch. The American Thyroid Association estimates that the pain commonly lasts between 1 and 3 months.
Other symptoms of subacute thyroiditis include:
- fever
- heavy menstrual periods
- depression
The first stage of subacute thyroiditis usually lasts for less than three months. The second stage may last for an additional nine to 15 months.

How Are Thyroid Nodules Treated
Treatment depends on the type of thyroid nodule. Treatment options include:
- No treatment/”watchful waiting.” If the nodules are not cancerous, you and your doctor may decide that you dont need to be treated at this time. You will see your doctor on a regular basis so he or she can watch for any changes in the nodules.
- Radioactive iodine. Your doctor may use radioactive iodine to treat hyperfunctioning thyroid nodules and goiters with several nodules. The radioactive iodine is absorbed into the thyroid gland, causing the nodules to shrink. Pregnant women and women trying to become pregnant should not have this treatment.
- Surgery. Surgery to take out the nodules is the best treatment for nodules that are cancerous, cause “obstructive symptoms” , and are suspicious .
