Can Excessive Coughing Cause Abdominal Pain

Can Stomach Ulcers Lead to Stomach Cancer?

If you suspect that you are in abdominal pain from coughing or sneezing an excessive amount, you may be right. Intense coughing, even from a short-term case of the common cold, can overuse and strain your stomach muscles, making your abdomen feel soreand coughing, sneezing, or laughing especially uncomfortable.

You can also strain or pull your stomach muscles from lifting heavy objects improperly, twisting the wrong way, or engaging in especially strenuous abdominal exercises. Abdominal pain from improper form or overzealous activity is usually short-lived, and easily able to be treated at home with a few simple remedies.

If your pain is severe, doesnt improve quickly, or is accompanied by other symptoms like fever or dry cough, call your doctor to make an appointment. Your cough and stomach pain may be caused by a severe enough strain that you need physical therapy to help fully heal, or related to an underlying health condition that needs medical treatment.

Smoking Cigarettes May Worsen Menstrual Cramps

By Rosemary Black, Reuters Health

4 Min Read

– Women who smoke cigarettes may be at higher risk for menstrual pain, according to a new Australian study.

Compared to nonsmokers, smokers in the study were more likely to suffer from severe menstrual pain and to experience a worsening of pain as the number of cigarettes they smoked per day increased.

Exactly how smoking cigarettes might increase menstrual pain is not entirely clear, but it may happen via a decrease in the amount of oxygen available to the uterus, Dr. Jennifer Leighdon Wu, an obstetrician/gynecologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, told Reuters Health in a phone interview.

We know that smoking causes vasoconstriction, or constriction of the blood vessels, said Wu, who wasnt involved in the new study. When this happens with the uterus, it can cause pain.

The study, published in the journal Tobacco Control, tracked 9,067 women for an average of 13 years. At the start of the research, the women were between the ages of 18 and 23. About 25 percent reported experiencing dysmenorrhea, or painful periods, and approximately 25 percent were current smokers.

During the course of the study, about 14 percent of the women had painful periods 70 to 80 percent of the time, which the researchers considered to be chronic dysmenorrhea.

The results may provide an incentive for young women to abstain from smoking, study leader Dr. Hong Ju of the University of Queensland told Reuters Health by email.

Explained: The Link Between Stress And Stomach Problems

If you are experiencing stomach problems, then you may also be feeling stressed. When we experience high levels of stress, our gut also feels this stress. Stress and anxiety have been linked to chronic health problems such as heart disease, depression, and obesity. There is also a connection between stomach gurgling and bloating, constipation, and stomach pain. Further symptoms of stress induced stomach gurgling include:

  • Bad Bacteria Grows, Good Bacteria Dies
  • Leaky Gut
  • Reduced production of Serotonin

If your stomach gurgling is a symptom of stress, there are many things you can do to change your behavior and response to stress. In general, most of us will often respond to stressful events in a poor way. We will wait and hope that the source of our stress goes away by itself, excessively shop, drink alcohol, treat ourselves to something we want, or gamble. As a result, we then experience more stress and get stuck in a vicious circle.

There are far better ways to handle stress, including:

  • Meditation
  • Remove the Source of Stress
  • List Ways to Solve the Problem

When To See A Doctor

Most stomach spasms are harmless and go away without further treatment. If your stomach spasms are painful or happen often, they could be a sign of a more serious medical issue. See your doctor if you have any of these symptoms in addition to stomach spasms:

  • vomiting
  • blood in your bowel movements
  • severe pain, especially chest pain
  • long-lasting or recurring stomach spasms
  • fever
  • shortness of breath

You should also see your doctor if your stomach spasms are interfering with your daily life or causing you distress.

Smoking And Arthritis: How Smoking Relates To Joint Pain

Health Problems : Stomach Ache Causes

By now, most people understand that smoking cigarettes has many negative health benefits, but one surprising side effect of smoking is joint pain.1,2

A study published in Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases involving 13,000 people found that smoking made individuals more vulnerable to pain by about 30 percent.3 Even though only about 18 percent of Americans smoke, over 50 percent of patients who seek treatment for pain are smokers.4,5

This is how smoking relates to joint pain and the types of pain that are most common among long-term smokers.

Bloating Could Be Caused By Too Much Food Or Water

The first possibility to consider is that youre one of those people who loves to eat after smoking cannabis. Marijuana is known to produce an effect called the munchies, where cannabis stimulates your appetite. Many spend the time right after smoking eating, and they may overeat or eat at a faster pace than usual, which can lead to bloating. This effect may also encourage drinking more.

One HelloMD member reported, I also feel the need to drink a lot of water when I am smoking marijuana, so that contributed to the bloated stomach. And indeed, many people get dry mouth from smoking cannabis, so they may be drinking more water than usual.

If you experience bloating, make sure its not from one of these causes first. Its easy to rule out by refraining from eating or drinking for just one smoke session. Then, if you still get the bloating, you know its not because of your food or water intake.

Abdominal Aneurysm Risk Drops When Smokers Quit

And the longer it is since you had a cigarette, the lower your odds of trouble, study suggests

HealthDay Reporter

FRIDAY, Nov. 11, 2016 — Smokers have an elevated risk of dangerous aneurysms in the body’s largest artery, but quitting can cut those odds, a new study confirms.

Experts have long known that smoking raises the risk of abdominal aortic aneurysm — a weak spot in the wall of the aorta, where it passes through the abdomen. The aorta is the body’s main artery, and if an aneurysm there ruptures, it can cause massive internal bleeding.

Researchers said the new study, because of its large size, gives a clearer picture of the risks.

The investigators found that middle-aged smokers had a roughly one in nine chance of developing an abdominal aortic aneurysm in their lifetime.

But if they quit during the study period, that risk declined by 29 percent, versus people who kept smoking. And longer-term quitters — people who’d stopped smoking before the study — had an even lower risk, the findings showed.

“Quitting can substantially reduce the risk of abdominal aortic aneurysm,” said lead researcher Dr. Weihong Tang, an associate professor at the University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis. “It’s never too late to quit.”

Dr. Elizabeth Ross, a cardiologist and spokesperson for the American Heart Association, agreed.

“Some people think that if they’ve been smoking for decades, it’s too late to benefit from quitting,” Ross said.

If you have reason to believe that your stomach muscles have been overworked through intense cough or another activity, a normal body temperature, and no other symptoms, your pain will probably go away on its own. Rest and recuperate, take an over-the-counter cough medicine or pain medication like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, and ice your stomach muscles with an ice or gel pack. You should be able to feel more comfortable within a few days, if not hours.

If you are experiencing fever, cough, stomach pain, and other symptoms that suggest your discomfort isnt due to muscle strain, you may be suffering from a condition that requires medical treatment beyond simple home remedies. Gastritis: Myths And Facts

What Can Cause Abdominal Pain?

Myths vs. facts /Bienestar Sanitas Magazine Ed.128. Text: Maricielo Acero

Date:

Gastritis has to be one of our most common complaints in everyday life. We’ve all experienced that burning pain in our stomachs at some point. Let’s look at some of the most common questions around this condition.

Myth: Eating citrus fruits can give you gastritis.

Fact: No. Citrus fruits on their own won’t increase the acidity of the stomach enough to cause gastritis. What happens is that acidic foods can trigger gastroesophageal reflux or GERD, and cause symptoms such as a burning sensation in the upper central abdomen, heartburn, and bloating, explains gastroenterologist Dr. Oscar GutiĆ©rrez. Because there are many causes of inflammation and irritation of the stomach lining, the best thing to do is to pay attention to which foods repeatedly give you digestive problems, because everyone is sensitive to different things and there are no hard and fast rules. What is good for one person can be terrible for someone else and it’s best to eliminate those trigger foods from your diet.

Myth: Gastritis is caused by stress.

Myth: Going hungry can cause gastritis.

Myth: Smoking damages your lungs, but not your stomach.

Myth: Gastritis is an infection.

Myth: Children don’t get gastritis.

Myth: Pain-killers can help to alleviate gastritis.

Myth: Antacids cure gastritis.

Myth: Drinking lots of water helps.

Often, upper stomach pain after eating arises from your stomach. Chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and functional dyspepsia are the most common causes of such pain.;

Summary of the causes of upper-middle stomach pain after eating:

  • Gastritis and peptic ulcer disease.
  • Functional dyspepsia.
  • Pancreatic diseases, especially chronic pancreatitis.
  • GERD and hiatal hernia.
  • Other less frequent causes such as gastric cancer, liver diseases, and others.

Smoked Meat And Stomach Cancer

Smoked meats are a source of nitrosamines, which are chemical compounds linked to cancer. A 2006 review study published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology found an association between smoked meat intake and the development of gastric cancer. However, the authors of the study noted that the evidence is preliminary and more research is necessary. Indigestion, abdominal discomfort and bloating are early signs of stomach cancer and may progress to vomiting and stomach pain in advanced stages.

What Are The Complications Of Gastritis

Chronic gastritis hurts your stomach lining. It can raise your risk for other health problems such as:

  • Peptic ulcer disease, painful sores in your upper digestive tract
  • Gastric polyps, small masses of cells that form on the inside lining of your stomach
  • Stomach tumors, both cancerous and non-cancerous

You may also get atrophic gastritis. This can happen if your gastritis is caused by the H. pylori bacteria or by an autoimmune disorder. Atrophic gastritis destroys the stomach lining cells that make your digestive juices. This raises your risk for getting stomach cancer.

Chs Phases & Timeline

How to manage leg & stomach pain in an individual with depression? – Dr. Sanjay Gupta

But what are these symptoms, and who gets them? One study found that young adults who had a history of long and heavy marijuana use were most likely to develop cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, but it does not manifest immediately. A 2011 report published in Current Drug Abuse Reviews noted that in nearly all cases, there is a delay of several years from the time marijuana smoking started to when the first CHS symptoms are felt. Most people who report CHS admit to smoking marijuana every day and smoke it as much as three to five times at a time.

There are three main phases of cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome:

  • The Prodromal Phase: where patients experience general morning sickness and abdominal discomfort or even pain. Since these symptoms are relatively mild and can occur after years of cannabis use, many people continue to smoke marijuana or even increase their consumption out of the belief that the cannabis will settle their stomach.
  • The Hyperemetic Phase: which is the acute phase of cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome. Here, the effects of CHS are intensified; patients feel persistent nausea and might retch and vomit for as long as hours at a time. The discomfort in the abdomen is upgraded to pain, and the severity of the symptoms means that patients struggle with weight loss and dehydration.
  • The Recovery Phase: when the patient abstains from cannabinoid use and symptoms begin to fade, though using again tends to induce symptoms again.

    Healthy Alternatives To Smoking

It may come as a surprise to smokers that their habit could be causing pain or making existing pain worse. Simply realizing and understanding this may be enough to help smokers reconsider their choices. Smokers can treat the symptoms of their pain with physical therapy and arthritis relief creams like JointFlex. But quitting smoking once and for all is the best way to prevent pain and many other health problems.

Smokers must find alternative coping mechanisms to deal with pain and stress and take the place of cigarettes in daily life. Oftentimes simply going for a walk or other form of exercise can bring relief and distract the mind from cigarette cravings. It is advisable to join a support group, surround oneself with positive individuals, and to discuss smoking cessation methods with a trusted doctor. Quitting smoking is never easy, but it is always worth it for health, wellness, and longevity.

    Types Of Pain Smokers Feel

In the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases study referenced above, the most pronounced type of pain that smokers felt was back pain.3 However, this wasnt the only type of pain reported from the surveys. Neck, shoulder, hip, knee, hand, and elbow pain were also more common in smokers than non-smokers.

Also, individuals who already have joint conditions like osteoarthritis experience more severe pain and loss of bone cartilage if they are smokers. Another study involving 159 men with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis found that on a pain scale of one to 100, smokers reported an average pain score of 60 and non-smokers just 45.8 To explain this increase in knee pain, the researchers hypothesized that smoking may increase oxidant stress to destroy cartilage, inhibit cell proliferation, and increase carbon monoxide in the blood to prevent cartilage repair.

    Smoking And Your Digestive System

Cigarette smoking causes a variety of life-threatening diseases, including lung cancer, emphysema, and heart disease. An estimated 400,000 deaths each year are caused directly by cigarette smoking. Smoking is responsible for changes in all parts of the body, including the digestive system. This fact can have serious consequences because it is the digestive system that converts foods into the nutrients the body needs to live.Current estimates indicate that about one-third of all adults smoke. And, while adult men seem to be smoking less, women and teenagers of both sexes seem to be smoking more. How does smoking affect the digestive system of all these people?
