Do your ears ring after a loud concert” Nerves that sense touch in your face and neck may be behind the racket in your brain, University of Michigan researchers say.
Touch-sensing nerve cells step up their activity in the brain after hearing cells are damaged, a study by U-M Kresge Hearing Research Institute scientists shows. Hyperactivity of these touch-sensing neurons likely plays an important role in tinnitus, often called ringing in the ears. The study, now online in the European Journal of Neuroscience, will appear in the journals first January issue.
The research findings were made in animals, but they suggest that available treatments such as acupuncture, if used to target nerves in the head and neck, may provide relief for some people plagued by tinnitus, says Susan E. Shore, Ph.D., lead author of the study and research professor in the Department of Otolaryngology and the Kresge Hearing Research Institute at the U-M Medical School.

Complications Due To Middle Fossa Surgical Approach
The middle fossa approach to the facial nerve, necessary in some cases, is a more serious operation. Hearing and balance disturbances are more likely following this surgery. Permanent impairment is none the less uncommon.

That is why, if a single nerve is damaged, it only leads to partial loss of sensations rather than complete numbness.

An earache in a person who smokes or drinks could be a symptom of cancer in the head or neck region. Squamous cell carcinoma, which often causes otalgia, is usually located in the tonsil, tongue base, larynx or hypopharynx.
Other causes of ear pain are diseases of the oral cavity or dental infection, especially involving molars. Disease of the temporomandibular joint often causes otalgia, and tumors or infections of the nose, sinus region, parts of the tongue or floor of the mouth are rare causes of otalgia.

How The Neck Is Related To Proper Ear Function
If you look at the anatomy of the neck and head, it is no wonder that the top bone of the spine, the atlas, can have an effect on the proper function of the ears. Located at the base of the skull, the atlas is almost directly between the ears. If a slight misalignment exists, what may this do to one or more of the ears?
If the eustachian tubes are affected, this can limit the ears ability to drain off excess fluid. Normally, the tiny eustachian tube can remove excess fluid so that things like vertigo, a feeling of fullness in the ear, or an earache do not occur. But if the atlas misalignment is putting pressure on the tube or causing inflammation in the area, it could lead to the gradual formation of a lesion on the eustachian tube.
In fact, in one study involving 300 Menieres disease patients, it was noted that this was a problem that existed. The average time between a traumatic experience that could have misaligned the atlas and the onset of Menieres was about 12.5 years. These results show the gradual effect that an upper cervical misalignment can have on the ears. Thus, the ears are clearly related to the cervical spine.
How Is Tn Diagnosed
TN diagnosis is based primarily on the persons history and description of symptoms, along with results from physical and neurological examinations. Other disorders that cause facial pain should be ruled out before TN is diagnosed. Some disorders that cause facial pain include post-herpetic neuralgia , cluster headaches, and temporomandibular joint disorder . Because of overlapping symptoms and the large number of conditions that can cause facial pain, obtaining a correct diagnosis is difficult, but finding the cause of the pain is important as the treatments for different types of pain may differ.
Most people with TN eventually will undergo a magnetic resonance imaging scan to rule out a tumor or multiple sclerosis as the cause of their pain. This scan may or may not clearly show a blood vessel compressing the nerve. Special MRI imaging procedures can reveal the presence and severity of compression of the nerve by a blood vessel.
A diagnosis of classic trigeminal neuralgia may be supported by an individuals positive response to a short course of an antiseizure medication. Diagnosis of TN2 is more complex and difficult, but tends to be supported by a positive response to low doses of tricyclic antidepressant medications , similar to other neuropathic pain diagnoses.
Symptoms Of Thyroid Nodules

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Symptoms
The medial nerve is a sensory nerve for your thumb, index and middle fingers, and half of your ring finger.
CTS causes numbness, tingling, and pain in those areas. The symptoms may radiate up into your arm and shoulder. The symptoms are frequently worse at night.
The medial nerve is also a motor nerve to your thumb, so CTS can cause thumb weakness and clumsiness too. This can make it hard to grip things. As CTS becomes more severe, you may notice muscle wasting under your thumb .
How Neck Pain May Feel With Cgh
CGH pain starts in the neck and is commonly felt as a steady dull ache that may be aggravated by certain activities or postures. While CGH is typically a one-sided pain, both sides of the neck may be painful depending on the severity. In mild CGH, the neck pain is usually present only on the affected side; but in severe cases both sides of the neck may be painful. However, pain on the affected side is more dominant in severe cases. CGH may also be accompanied by some neck stiffness and reduced range of motion.

Headache without neck pain can also occur in CGH. In these cases, the source of CGH may not cause neck pain, but may be tender to touch. Abnormal head movements or applying pressure on the back of the neck may trigger CGH.
